What is hazard and risk?
Types of Hazards & Strategies to Avoid Each Hazard in an ICT Environment Lesson 4.2
1. Physical Hazards These are hazards that can cause physical harm. Examples include tripping over loose cables, electrical shocks from malfunctioning equipment, or injuries from lifting heavy equipment.
1. Physical Hazards Keep workspaces tidy to avoid tripping over loose cables. Regularly inspect equipment to ensure it’s in good working order and doesn’t pose an electrical shock risk. Use proper lifting techniques when moving heavy equipment.
2. Ergonomic Hazards These are hazards related to the design of the workplace and equipment. Poor workstation setup can lead to repetitive strain injuries, and prolonged screen time can lead to eye strain or other visual impairments.
Set up workstations properly to avoid strain . This includes adjusting chair and monitor heights, using a separate keyboard and mouse when working on a laptop, and taking regular breaks to move around. Use ergonomic equipment, such as chairs with good back support and keyboards that promote a natural hand position. Wear anti-radiation glasses to protect your eyes from the harmful blue light emitted by computer screens, which can cause eye strain and other visual impairments over time. 2. Ergonomic Hazards:
3 . Chemical Hazards These are hazards related to the substances used in the production and maintenance of ICT equipment. Certain cleaning agents used on hardware can be harmful if not handled correctly.
Follow safety instructions when using cleaning agents or other chemicals. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves and eye protection if necessary. Store chemicals safely and dispose of them properly. Chemical Hazards
4. Psychosocial Hazards These are hazards related to the way work is designed, managed, and the social context of work. They could include high job demands, low job control, and poor support. Promote a positive work culture that values work-life balance. Provide support for employees dealing with high job demands. Encourage open communication and provide resources for mental health support.
5 . Biological Hazards These are hazards related to exposure to infectious microorganisms like bacteria , viruses , and fungi . In an ICT context, this could be relevant for workers who share equipment or workspaces.
Biological Hazards Encourage good hygiene practices , such as regular hand washing. Clean shared equipment and workspaces regularly. Follow public health advice, especially during times of infectious disease outbreaks. Avoid sharing personal equipment like headphones , as it can be unhygienic and increase the risk of spreading infections.
5S in ICT Workplace
You have a big box of Lego blocks. Now, you want to build a castle, but the blocks are all mixed up . It would be hard to find the pieces you need, right? That’s where the 5S method comes in. It’s like a set of rules to help you organize your Lego box (or in this case, a workplace) so you can work more efficiently and safely . Together, let’s understand what are the 5S in Occupational Health & Safety in ICT.
The 5S in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in ICT is a systematic method for organizing workplaces. It was developed in Japan and is often associated with lean manufacturing, though it can be applied to any work environment, including ICT. The 5S stands for five Japanese words: In English, these translate to 1. Seiri Sort, 2. Seiton Set in Order 3. Seiso Shine 4. Seiketsu Standardize 5. Shitsuke Sustain .
1. Sort ( Seiri ): This involves organizing the workplace by removing unnecessary items and keeping only what is needed . In an ICT context, this could mean removing outdated or broken equipment, unnecessary files on a computer, or clutter on a desk.
2. Set in Order ( Seiton ): This involves arranging necessary items, so they are easy to use and accessible. Each item should have a designated place. For example, in an ICT environment, this could mean organizing cables, labeling storage areas, or arranging desktop icons for easy access.
3. Shine ( Seiso ): This involves cleaning the workplace regularly to keep it safe and efficient. In an ICT context, this could mean cleaning computer screens, keyboards, and other equipment regularly to keep them in good working condition.
4. Standardize ( Seiketsu ): This involves creating rules and standard operating procedures to maintain the first three S’s. In an ICT context, this could mean establishing procedures for regular computer maintenance, data backup, or workstation setup.
5. Sustain ( Shitsuke ): This involves maintaining and improving the standards set in the first four(4) S’s . This requires ongoing effort and commitment from everyone in the workplace. In an ICT context, this could mean regular training and reminders about OHS practices, or periodic audits to ensure compliance.
1.1. In the context of the Lego blocks scenario, imagine you are leading a team to build a complex structure. How would you apply principles similar to the 5S method to ensure your team works efficiently and effectively? Answer: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
1.2. Carefully analyze each situation and write only the letter of your answer. 1. You are in an ICT room full of outdated or broken equipment, unnecessary files on a computer, and clutter on a desk. What should you do according to the 5S principle? a) Leave it as it is. b) Remove unnecessary items. c) Use the broken equipment. d) Create more clutter.
2. You notice that the cables, storage areas, and desktop icons in the ICT room are disorganized. What should you do according to the 5S principle? a) Ignore it. b) Arrange necessary items. c) Make it more disorganized. d) Remove all the items.
3. The computer screens, keyboards, and other equipment in the ICT room are dirty. What should you do according to the 5S principle? a) Leave them dirty. b) Clean the workplace regularly. c) Use the dirty equipment. d) Replace all the equipment.
