Hazard Hazard is the potential of a substance to cause damage. Types of Hazards There are following types of hazards:- Fire Hazards Chemical Hazards Electrical Hazards Mechanical Hazards Toxic material Hazards This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA-NC

Fire The self-sustaining process of rapid oxidation of a fuel which produces heat and light. OR Fire is an exothermic chemical reaction between oxygen and fuel at certain temperature.

Any actions, materials, or conditions that might increase the growth or development (size or severity)of a fire or that might cause a fire to start, leading to property damage, environment damage, injuries or even loss of life, are called fire hazards. FIRE HAZARDS:

Fire triangle is a model of three conditions that are necessary to start a fire. OR It is a model for conveying the components of fire. Fire Triangle or Fire Tetrahedron This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

The triangle illustrates the three elements, a fire needs to ignite:- Heat Fuel Oxygen Heat sources : Sun, hot surface, sparks, friction and electrical energy etc. Oxygen sources : Normal air contains 21% O 2 . Fuel may also contains oxygen.

There are following types of hazards:- Electrical Hazards Process and operation Hazards House Hazards Storage Hazards Smoking Hazards Friction Hazards Types of fire Hazards

The national Fire Protection Association(NFPA) categorizes fire by class. The classification of fire is based on the combustible material that possibly catch fire, accordingly the safeguards against such different types of fires can be planned. Classification of fire

Classes of fire

Class A fires are the fires that involve ordinary combustible materials such as cloth, wood, paper, rubber and many plastics. Class A fires A

Class B fires are the fires that involve flammable and combustible liquids such as alcohol, diesel oil and oil based paints etc. and flammable gases. 2 . Class B fires B

Class C fires are the fires that involve energized electrical equipments. 3. Class C fires C

Class D fires are the fires that involve combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium and sodium. 4. Class D fires D

Class K fires are the fires that involve vegetable oils, animal oils, or fats in cooking appliances. 5. Class K fires K
