Definition A hearing aid is a device that can amplify sound waves in order to help a deaf or hard-of-hearing person hear sounds more clearly.
Components: 1- one or more microphone: to convert sound into an electrical signal 2- Amplifier: to increase the strength of the electrical signal 3- Loudspeaker called “a receiver”: to turn electricity back into sound 4- Battery: to provide the power needed by the amplifier. 5- Ear mold: (types; Occluded custom mold, open custom mold)
Component location:
Types of hearing aids : 1- Behind-The-Ear ( BTE ) 2- receiver-in-the-canal ( RITC ), *receiver in the canal behind the ear also known as: RIC, RITC and CRT (canal receiver technology) 3- In-The-Canal ( ITC ) 4- Completely-In-The-Canal ( CIC ) 5- In-The-Ear ( ITE ) 6-Spectacle or Eye-Glass 7 -Body-Worn Hearing Aids
Ear mold: Ear mold and shells of different styles fill different portions of the concha and the canal. Ear mold Materials : - Lucite (Hard Acrylic ) used for ITC\ITE and CIC Soft Acrylic Silicone
Ear-mold Types: 1- Full Shell 2- Half Shell 3- Skeleton 4- Half and Quarter Skeleton 5- Canal or Meatal Tip 6- Non-Occluding ( These ear-molds are recommended for patient’s with high frequency hearing loss or patients complaining of occlusion ) 7- venting ear-mold (for people with low-frequency HL) * pt with low freq HL less then 50dB HL often compline of echoes from their own sound.
Hearing Aid fitting Binaural fitting is avoided in the following conditions: 1. Adults with hearing loss when there is more than a 20 dB gap between the two air conduction threshold curves or > 12% in word recognition score. 2. If one ear is normal or if one ear is profound. 3. Presence of a medical contraindication as active discharge from one ear. 4. The patient refuses to accept binaural aids .
If binaural fitting is not possible, the ear to be aided is the one that 1 . The ear with air conduction threshold nearest to the 60 at 1 kHz. 2. The ear with better speech discrimination scores. 3. The ear with the widest dynamic range. 4. If unilateral tinnitus is present, fitting the ear with tinnitus may provide some masking. 5. The ear without problems (active discharge). 6. If audiometric and other consideration allow, the patient opinion and lifestyle should be considered (e.g.: if the patient already use monaural HA it is best to continue to use the same ear, drivers need to hear in the right ear so they can hear their clients).
