About This Presentation

Heat Detection Technique in Swine Raising is a detailed teaching demo where you can see to it or check if the pig is in estrus. Aside From that, heat detection technique can also be a technique where you can check and you can inseminate.

Slide Content

A HAPPY MORNING EVERYONE!

HEAT/ ESTRUS DETECTION

Objectives: At the end of this topic, you MAY now be able to: 1. Identify the signs of in-heat/estrus 2. Know and perform the heat detection techniques

What is IN-HEAT/ESTRUS DETECTION? is the process of identifying which females are receptive to being bred

Sows come into heat every 18-24 days with the average of 21 days. Estrous Cycle is the 21-day cycle between in-heat periods. Estrus/in-heat is the period when female animals become sexually receptive, signaling they are ready for mating. Estrus period usually takes 3-5 days

Reddening and swelling of the vulva Mucus discharge SIGNS OF IN-HEAT

Grunting and restlessness Capricious appetite Mounting receptiveness SIGNS OF IN-HEAT

Frequent Urination Erect ears SIGNS OF IN-HEAT

1. Haunch Pressure Test This is done by applying pressure on the rump with both hands. A receptive animal will just stand firm and assume a mating position. TECHNIQUES IN HEAT DETECTION HEAT DETECTION

2. Riding-the-Back Test This is done by riding the back of the animal, the receptive female will assume a mating position. HEAT DETECTION

3. Semen-on-Snout Test This is done by placing sample of semen on the snout of the female. A receptive female will just look around and assume a mating position in the presence of boar semen odor. HEAT DETECTION

4. Teaser Boar Method This is done with a teaser usually a vasectomized boar. If the female allows the teaser to mount or assumes a mating position, she is sexually receptive. HEAT DETECTION

REMEMBER! The most important step for successfully breeding in swine is good heat detection Heat detection takes good observation skills and routine

EVALUATION !! 1. The 21-day cycle between in-heat periods. 2. Process of identifying females that are receptive to be bred. 3. Period when animals are receptive and signaling for ready to mate. 4. Estrus period of swine. 5. Estrous cycle of swine. 6. Technique where applying pressure on the rump with both hands. 7. Technique done by riding the back of the animal.

8-12. Techniques of Heat Detection 12- 19. Signs of Heat.

IN OUR LABORATORY CLASS, WE WILL BE DOING AN ACTUAL DEMONSTRATION ON HEAT DETECTION. Are you ready for the CHALLENGE ?

Getting excited for the next topic? BREEDING SYSTEM and ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION

Your Assignment ! Do research the following: 1. What is Artificial Insemination? 2. What are the different kinds and types of breeding system?
