HISTOLOGY OF PHARYNX & LARYNX Dr. Maria Shahzad Dept of Anatomy (RCD) Histology online lecture Date:3 rd june ,2020

PHARYNX; The  pharynx   is the part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity, and above the esophagus and larynx – the tubes going down to the stomach and the lungs.  The human  pharynx  is conventionally divided into  three  sections : N asopharynx   O ropharynx Laryngopharynx

Sections of pharynx

HISTOLOGY OF PHARYNX; From within outward , the walls of the pharynx consists of following four layers; 1.Mucosa 2.Submucosa 3.Muscle layer 4.Fibrosa

HISTOLOGY OF PHARYNX; 1.Mucosa ; It consists of ; a . Epithelium: Oropharynx and laryngopharynx are lined by stratified squamous epithelium . Nasopharynx lined by ciliated pseudostratified epithelium with goblet cells . b. Lamina propria : rich in elastic tissue contain simple branched tubuloacinar glands , mostly are seromucous variety but in area covered by stratified squamous epithelium some pure mucous glands also present . lymphatic tissue also present In posteriosuperior wall lymphatic nodules as PHARYNGEAL TONSIL .

HISTOLOGY OF PHARYNX; 2. Submucosa; contain loose connective tissue 3.Muscle layer; contain skeletal variety 4.Fibrosa; consists of thin layer of fibrous connective tissue

HISTOLOGY OF PHARYNX;

HISTOLOGY OF LARYNX The  larynx  is  located  within the anterior aspect of the neck, anterior to the inferior portion of the pharynx and superior to the trachea. The laryngeal wall consists of ; 1.Mucosa 2.Intrinsic muscles 3.cartilages

HISTOLOGY OF LARYNX 1.Mucosa ; It consists of ; a. Epithelium: Laryngeal inlet, epiglottis, true vocal cords are lined by stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium . Rest of the larynx lined by ciliated pseudostratified epithelium with goblet cells . b. Lamina propria : consists of fine connective tissue contain simple branched tubuloacinar glands (mixed) consists of lymphatic nodules

HISTOLOGY OF LARYNX 2.Intrinsic Muscles; skeletal type 3.Cartilages; cricoid, thyroid, most of aryteniods are hyaline variety. Epiglottis, cuneiform, corniculate and tip of aryteniods are elastic type. EPIGLOTTIS; covered on both sides by mucosa , lingual and laryngeal surface covered by stratified squamous non keratinized epithelium , lower half covered by respiratory epithelium . lamina propria contain tubuloacinar glands of mixed variety which lie in (pock –marks) irregular depressions .
