Definition: Aerobic exercise ( cardio ) is physical exercise of low to high intensity that depends on the aerobic energy generating process. Aerobic actually means "relating to, involving, or requiring oxygen", and refers to the use of oxygen to properly meet energy demands during exercise. This improves the efficiency of the body’s cardiovascular system in transporting and absorbing oxygen. “Aerobic” is derived from the Greek language during the 19 th century.
Examples of Aerobic Exercises:
Origin of Aerobic Exercises: The history of cardio exercises can be traced back to the 1960s. The term aerobics was first coined by Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper, an exercise physiologist based in the San Antonio Air Force Hospital, Texas. He developed a system of exercises to prevent coronary artery sickness. This system was originally intended for those in the military. However, Dr. Cooper decided that the general public would also benefit from his exercises, especially people suffering from obesity. He then gathered all of the aspects and methods he founded and published it in his book Aerobics , which was released across the United States in 1968. Jackie Sorenson developed dance routines shortly after Cooper’s book was published. This is now known as dance aerobics. Professional gymnast Gin Miller developed step aerobics in 1989 after rehabilitating her knee on the steps of her front porch. She then sold it to Reebok.

Changes on Aerobic Exercises Today: Aerobic exercises are now mixed with music to slim and tone mostly women, an example of this would be Zumba. It is usually taught in a “cardio class”. But another example of an aerobic exercise that is now in the form of a class is cycling. There are tons of not only cycling classes but also cycling gyms that focus on just the practice of using the stationary bike to increase heart and breathing rate. People use water aerobics a lot now a days. They even made water weights made of foam that people can use in the pool to take their exercises to a new level. There are plenty of water aerobic classes offered at your local gyms as well.
My Thoughts on Aerobic Exercises: I personally think that Aerobic Exercises are great! For women it’s a great way to slim and tone your body. For older people it’s a great way to keep up with your cardiovascular health. Over weight people will benefit from the ability to shed off excess weight through the use of Aerobic Exercises, improving their overall health. It’s a great way to stay in shape without putting a crazy amount of pressure on your joints.
