How are Clouds Formed ? Clouds are formed due to the evaporation-condensation cycle that takes place on daily basis in the earths atmosphere. Clouds on Earth are mainly made up of water (H2O) but in some cases have higher acid content due to the pollution from factories vehicals etc which makes them corrosive and thus when these clouds rain we get what is called as acid rain. On many planets like Venus the clouds are made of nitric acid and carbondioxide which always stays as clounds and never rains as the temerpature for their condensation is pretty low and thus this layer of permanent could envelopes the planet at all times. Origin of Clouds The evaporation cycle is the first step in the formation of clouds. In this step water from all the waterbodies get heated up due to the heat radiations from the sun and eventually evaporation begins.During evaporation unlike boiling where changing of water into water vapour begins at the bottop of the container and spreads in the entire volume evaporation is a surface phenomenon and thus takes place only at the surface of the water bodies. The water vapour formed reaches upper layers of the atmosphere and as it reaches the air which holds the watervapour becomes cooler and cooler untill finally it cant hold any more watervapour (air is saturated) and at this point small droplets form and condense on dust particles or acid partilces suspended in air. The size of this droplet is so small that it reamains suspended in air as clouds and collides with other water droplets. Upon collision the water droplets combine to form bigger droplets untill finall they become huge enough to no longer be suspended in air and fall on the surface of the Earth as rain. Many of these droplets also stay suspended as ice nuclie in the air and can also cause hailstorms or snowfall to occur.
