Chapter Life Processes (Class X) By Dr Sanjoy Deka, TGT (Science) Sainik School Goalpara , Assam Photosynthesis
It is the process by which autotrophs take in carbon dioxide and water from the outside and convert them into carbohydrates in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. The carbohydrates which are not used immediately are stored in the form of starch, which serves as the internal energy reserve to be used as and when required by the plant. Chemical Equation of photosynthesis Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis occurs in Chloroplast of green leaves. Upper epidermis Lower epidermis Stomata Cross Section of a leaf S ite of photosynthesis
Structure of chloroplast
Stages of photosynthesis The following events occur during this process – Light Reaction : Occurs in thylakoid membrane (also called Hill Reaction, light dependent reaction) 1. Absorption of light energy by chlorophyll . 2. Conversion of light energy to chemical energy ( ATP and NADPH ) and splitting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen in presence of light ( Photolysis of water ). (b) Dark Reaction: Occurs in Stroma (also called Calvin Cycle, Carbon fixation reaction) 3. Reduction of carbon dioxide to carbohydrates .
PHOTOSYNTHES I S NADP + = Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (a coenzyme) NADPH= Reduced form of NADP + ATP= Adenosine tri phosphate
Photosynthesis continues day and night. Light reaction requires sunlight but dark reaction does not require light. It depends on the energy produced during light reaction to run the Calvin cycle . 18 ATP and 12 NADPH required to produce one glucose molecule . 6 turn of CO 2 in Calvin Cycle produces one glucose molecule. Important points to be remembered
Write the chemical equation of photosynthesis. What is the site of light reaction and dark reaction? Draw and label the parts of chloroplast . What is photolysis of water? During which phase of photosynthesis O 2 is liberated? Explain light reaction and dark reaction . Draw the cross section of leaf and label its important parts. Questions ?
