It is the process by which autotrophs take in carbon dioxide and water from the outside and convert them into carbohydrates in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. Stages of photosynthesis The following events occur during this process – Light Reaction : Occurs in thylakoid membrane (also called Hill Reaction, light dependent reaction) 1. Absorption of light energy by chlorophyll . 2. Conversion of light energy to chemical energy ( ATP and NADPH ) and splitting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen in presence of light ( Photolysis of water ). (b) Dark Reaction: Occurs in Stroma (also called Calvin Cycle, Carbon fixation reaction) 3. Reduction of carbon dioxide to carbohydrates .

Photosynthesis continues day and night. Light reaction requires sunlight but dark reaction does not require light. It depends on the energy produced during light reaction to run the Calvin cycle . 18 ATP and 12 NADPH required to produce one glucose molecule . 6 turn of CO 2 in Calvin Cycle produces one glucose molecule.
