CORROSION

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

Corrosion is a natural process. Corrosion is an electrochemical reaction in which a metal is changed into a chemical salt. Corrosion is the deterioration of metal by chemical or electro-chemical attack and can take place internally as well as on the surface. CORROSION

The responsible factors for corrosion is the metal itself, the environmental chemicals, temperature and the design. Example: Formation of rust in the surface of iron.

There are two general classification of corrosion. These are direct chemical attack and electro-chemical attack. CLASSIFICATION OF CORROSION

DIRECT CHEMICAL ATTACK SPILLED BATTERY ACID

GALLEY

LAVATORY

ENTRAPPED CLEANING SOLUTIONS

An electrochemical attack may be likened chemically to the electrolytic reaction. In order to understand this class of corrosion we must understand the basic facts of electro-chemistry. ELECTRO-CHEMICAL ATTACK

Atoms A basic unit of element BASIC ELECTRO-CHEMISTRY

Molecules A cluster of atoms which make up the smallest identifiable unit of chemical compound

Example Sodium (Na) is a metallic element and consist simply atom. Combined with Chlorine (Cl) it forms a molecules of sodium chloride (NaCl) or common table salt.

Made up of protons with positive charges (+) and neutrons with no charge surrounding the nucleus with negative charge (-) (+) positive charge
