How to find a broken link and fix it? Ruslan Saifullin [email protected]

Why you need to find and fix broken links? Ultimately, broken links, whether the result of human error or just the natural decay of the internet, are bad news for your users and SEO strategy. If not properly fixed and monitored, broken links can cause your traffic, authority, and rankings to tumble while your number of frustrated users and bounce rate increase .

Let’s do an website audit As example is website https://adrtc.org

I’m going to use service wizardstool.com to find broken links

Step 1 Run check on https://wizardstool.com/

When you press the button Find broken links it will run checkup and you will be redirected to the next page and when the audit done you will see the result.

Press “Display 12 Broken links” to see only broken links. Let’s check them one by one and fix.

Step 2 Broken link https://rescue.houndwatch.net/ . The label EXTERNAL says that the broken link is pointing to an external website. If I try to open it manually it indeed isn’t accessible. The domain owner abandoned the website. What should we do?

What to do with broken links? The easiest way is just to remove it. But there are also different strategies. C heck in Webarchive what content was on that page before. Can find another similar website with the same content and change the link to it Buy abandoned domain and restore previous content Restore content on your domain and change link to the page

For my case i’ll just remove the broken link.

Step 3 We know that website has the broken link, let’s find it on audited website. Take a look at the audit again. Look at the column Found on , it tells us that broken link is on the page https://adrtc.org/helpful-links/ you can open the page and find broken link. Or, another way is check the Anchor column has a value and link Find on page . This is quite handy way to see broken link on the page. Click on that link and it will highlight the place with broken link.

Step 4 The location of the link is identified, so now it’s easier to understand which template/part of the website you should edit. The next step depends on what CMS/framework you use. I’m not covering this topic here. So I remove the broken link and related context using Visual editor. Changes will be reflected on the website.

Step 5 Return to step 2. Apply steps to the next broken links from the Audit result. When you have fixed all broken links run audit again in order to ensure there are no more broken links.

Conclusion Regularly auditing your website for broken links is essential for maintaining functionality and user experience. Using Broken link cheker, you can quickly identify and fix dead links by verifying them, updating, or removing them as needed. This keeps your site accessible and improves SEO. Regular checks ensure your website remains in optimal condition.
