How to Get Financial Information from Wall Street Journal Website

Dow Jones offers an interactive financial data service free of charge on its Wall Street Journal website,
which provides updated financial market information as well as historical information. This document
explains how you can access it, navigate the site, and obtain financial market information from the Wall
Street Journal website.

Click “Markets” under “Markets” chart on the right side-banner on the home page of WSJ.

This is the home page of Market Data on Wall Street Journal. The home page provides overview of
current financial markets.



This part shows the current stock market situation. This part shows the current bond market situation.

This part shows the current foreign exchange situation.

You can find more detail market information by selecting one of tabs.

1. U.S. Stocks: This page provides current U.S. stock market indexes and stock market activities at New
York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.

2. FX: This page provides current foreign exchange rates.

3. Rates: This page provides current U.S. Treasury yield curve, bench mark Treasury securities prices and
yields, and money rates.

Find U.S. Stock Market Information

When you click “U.S. Stocks”, it brings to “U.S. stocks” overview page.


You can find current various stock market indexes in the U.S. stock markets. Four major stock market indexes,
widely cited on financial news, are Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), Nasdaq Composite, S&P 500, and
Russell 2000. Their latest numbers and their changes from the previous day (closing numbers) and their
percentage changes are listed here.

You can also find the market activity of the day so far – a number of stocks whose prices increased so far
(Advances), a number of stocks whose prices decreased so far (Declines), and a number stocks whose prices
have not changed so far (Unchanged) since the last trading day in two major stock markets, New York Stock
Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq. A number of stocks traded so far is shown under “Share Volume”.

On the right panel, it presents a historical chart of stock market index. By default, it shows Dow Jones
Industrial Average last one year. You can change the rage of period (1 day, 1 week, 3 months, 6 months, 2
years, and 5 years) as well as the indexes.

Scrolling down the “U.S. stocks” overview page, it presents links to more detail U.S. stock data.

To find closing price and other financial information on individual stock traded in NYSE and Nasdaq markets,
select items in “Closing Quote Tables” under “Closing Market Statistics.”

To find more detail information of stock market indexes, select “Stock Indexes: Data Bank” under “Closing
Market Statistics.”

You will see the detail most recent stock market closing information on new page. This page presents a
highest, lowest, and closing value of each stock market index and its change from previous trading day. It also
presents a percentage change from the beginning of the year (YTD % Chg), the highest and lowest value in the
last one year and its change in percentage since one year ago.

calendar icon, then a mini calendar pops up.

Select the date, then you will get the U.S. stock market indexes information on that particular date. This

Find Foreign Exchange Market Information

On the home page of Market Data on Wall Street Journal, click “FX” to bring up “Currencies” (Foreign
exchange rates) overview page. Alternatively, you can click “Currencies” under “Market Data Center.

Scroll down “Currencies Overview,” more detail foreign exchange information and other currencies
information can be found by selecting “New York Closing” with a mini calendar icon under “Exchange Rates”
in “Complete Currencies Data” on the right column.



“Exchange Rates: New York Closing Snapshot” page provides various foreign exchange rates against the
U.S. dollar. The exchange rates are quoted in the U.S. dollar (a value of one foreign currency unit) under
“IN US$” and in foreign currencies (a value of one U.S. dollar) under “PER US$”. Exchange rates are
given at the end of the trading day (e.g. Fri) and one on the previous trading day (e.g. Thurs.). A rate of
appreciation or depreciation of foreign currencies is given for one day under “1-Day” and since the
beginning of the year under “YTD”.

You can also get foreign exchange rate information in past here. Click “Find Historical Data” with a calendar
icon, a mini calendar pops up. Select date and you get foreign exchange rates on that date. The navigation is

Find Bond Market Information

On the home page of Market Data on Wall Street Journal, click “Rates” to bring up “Bonds, Rates & Credit
Markets Overview” page. Alternatively, you can click “Bonds, Rates & Credit Markets” under “Market Data
Center.

Scroll down the overview page, more detail money rates information can be found by selecting “Money Rates”
with a small calendar icon under “Benchmark & Comparisons” in “Complete Bonds, Rates & Credit Markets
