These are the five steps to start a dairy
Farm

planning and budgets
Layout Planning and infrastructure
development
Animal Sourcing
Dairy Farm Machinery
Herd Management

Project Report of Dairy Farming
Project Report should have following sections
a)Indian Dairy Scenario
b)Details about Location of the project
c)Techno Economic Parameters
1)Milking Cows breed and cost
2)Land required for project
3)Feed and Fodder management and cost
4)Working staff required and cost

10)Execution

Layout Planning and infrastructure
development
Conceptual Layouts covering all aspects of Modern Dairy Farm
Milking Cow Shed
Heifer Shed
Calf Housing
Milking Parlor with Treatment area and Utilities section
Office and Milk Processing Area
Other Infrastructure needs like Guard Room, Meter Rooms
Traffic Handling
Manure Handling
Bio Gas
Drainage at the farm
Silage, Grains and Hay Storage
Labor Quarters
Planning for different Resources like water, Electricity, Waste Water
Electric Points
Water Points for Cows and other usage
Roads and others

Land Selection
When looking for land, Please check the following
There is enough water for the farm for 100 Cows you need 25,000 Litres per
day for all the activities of the farm
the digging bore is not too deep and there is water available for Irrrigation
purpose also
There is good three phase Electric connection
Close to main road
Away from Other Poultry or Dairy Farm for Bio Security
There are no big Hills or any building that will obstruct natural ventilation.
The water is good quality and does not have too much salinity or Nitrates or
any sort of Heavy metals in it.
It is either a rectangular or a square plot helps with better design
It is well levelled and you do not have to spend money in levelling of the
same
It is above ground level to prevent flooding inside the farm
It is not close to any SWAMPY area or Mosquito Breeding Ground

1. Estimate of 100 Cows (Main Cow
Shed )
Main Cow Shed Covered Size 50" x 130" = 6500 Sq Feet.
Head lock 260" Feet for Feeding of Cows.

Cost of Shed Rs. 125 Per Sq Feet,3300'' x 125 = 4,12,500/-
Cost of Head Lock Rs. 335 Running Feet, 150x335 =50,250/-
Total Cost of Shed with Paint and Primer = Rs. 4, 62 ,750/-
Note :-1. Side Barrier Cost is Extra Rs. 335 /-Par Running
Feet.
2. Estimate of Heifer/Calf Shed

3.Poly House For Wheat Straw Storage
Poly House Size 40'' X 25''
Poly House Centre Height 15 Feet.
Total Cost of Poly House Rs. 55,000/-
4. Milk Room and Chaff Cutter Shed

Animal Sourcing
1) Always bring animals in Bathes of 10 to 15.
2) These 10 to 15 cows should include Milking cows
of 1
st
lactation , 2
nd
lactation , some Heifers and
some calf's.
3) A Farm should have 70/30 Milking/ Dry Cows
Ratio.
4) Never Purchase High yielders animals.
5) Plan a quarantine shed in your farm.
6) HF will Cost you 50K to 90K.

Dairy Farm Machinery

Herd Management : Key to Success
Cow milking process management: you have to manage complete milking
process to get maximum milk .
a)Milk Deviation : Actual Milk recording for each milking, you can know why the milk
is deviatingand why there is a loss/or increase in milk production
b)Milk let down
c)Actual Milking time of individual cattle’s
d)Cluster Kick Offs and unnecessary attachments
Feed Management system :Planning of feeds by grouping cattle’ s
a)Lactation Wise ,Weight wise ,Milk Production wise
b)Feed Management
c)Size of feed
d)Concentration and roughage
e)Feeding Efficiency

Herd Management : Key to Success
Health Management System :To analyze and control all type of disease at
first stage
a)Health Problems like Mastitis Detection, Negative energy Balance, Ketosis,
You can reduce yourcullingof cows and this means better utilization, a lot of
culling takes place because of Cows having udder infection or even a
repeaters
b)Reduction in IntercalvingPeriod: Reducing intercalvingperiod that means
the gap between two calving is one of the most important aspects in
managing the farmIf it is within the limits then everything is automatically
in control , Timely detection of heat means more milk and more calvesapart
from good health, this itself means saving of more than 10,000-15,000
Cow Comfort Management:
Behavior Monitoring
Analysis of Cow bedding condition
Influence of temp in on resting cows
