Common Names: Indian Pennywort. Water Pennywort. 
This perennial creeping plant is indigenous to tropical regions in both continents. 
Leaves smooth petiolate, grouped on the nodes of the stem, round-kidney shape, dark 
green in color, an inch broad, with crenate margin. Flowers pinkish, in three-flowered 
umbels. The fresh bruised leaves have a peculiar odor, and a bitter pungent taste

This  is  a  small  herbaceous  plant  with  palmately 
nerved or dissected leaves and simple umbels of small 
flowers found throughout India from the Himalayas to 
Cape of Comerin at the altitudes updo 2000 ft above 
sea-level. 
It is particularly grown in the damp places of West 
Bengal. The plant was known to the Sanskrit writers 
of very remote times. Its properties being similar to
those of Herpestle Monniera (Brahmi). Both plants 
are regarded as a tonic, useful in the skin diseases, 
nervous system, blood and brain cells.

Yields an oily volatile oily volatile liquid called vellarin,vellarin, which has a strong smell 
reminiscent of the plant, and a bitter, pungent, persistent taste. In large 
doses, vellarin causes intense itch over the entire body, pain in the ovaries 
and irritation of the urinary canal. 

Water  pennyworts,  Hydrocotyles,  are  very 
common. They have long creeping stems that 
often  form  dense  mats,  often  in  and  near 
ponds,  lakes,  rivers,  marshes  and  some 
species in coastal areas by the sea.

Leaves:
Simple, with small leafy outgrowth at the base, kidney shaped to round. Leaf edges are scalloped.
Flowers
Flower clusters are simple and flat-topped or rounded. Involucral bracts Inconspicuous bracts at the base of 
each flower. Indistinct sepals.
Fruits and reproduction
Elliptical to round with thin ridges and no oil tubes (vitta) which is characteristic in the fruit of umbelliferous 
plants.
The prostrate plants reproduce by seed and by sending roots from stem nodes.

Auduit cured a case: Girl, 20, weak and sickly-looking, since childhood troubled with 
glandular swellings, for eight years had lupus excedens of nose. Her mother had coppery 
eruption on face.
On right of nose was a button the size of six pence covered with a thick crust covering 
yellow pus mixed with blood. Margins irregular and livid. Five other buttons size of 
lentils near root of nose both sides.
Hydroc.  was  given  in  6c,  3c,  tincture  and  the  18c  potencies  in  succession  with

Preparation:-The carefully dried plant is coarsely powdered, covered with five 
parts by weight of alcohol, and allowed to remain eight days in a well-stoppered 
bottle, in a dark, cool place, being shaken twice a day. The tincture is then poured 
off, strained and filtered.

Gotu kola is an herb that is commonly used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. The
above-ground parts are used to make medicine.
Gotu kola is used to treat bacterial, viral or parasitic infections such as urinary tract infection (UTI),
shingles, leprosy, cholera, dysentery, syphilis, common cold, influenza, H1N1 (Swine) flu, elephantiasis,
tuberculosis and schistosomiasis.
Gotu kola is also used for fatigue, anxiety, depression, psychiatric disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and
improving memory and Intelligence. Other uses include wound healing, trauma and circulation
