Hypothesis Testing
Introduction A hypothesis is a testable statement or prediction about a relationship between variables. It serves as a foundation for scientific experiments, guiding the research process. Typically, hypotheses are framed to be either confirmed or refuted through observation or experimentation. In this assignment, we have taken the example of people’s age, gender who are suffering with heart disease
1) Population and sample Population: The entire group that is being studied. Sample: A smaller portion of the population used for analysis. Parameters: Measures that describe the population. Statistics: Measures that describe the sample.
Two types of hypothesis testing Hypothesis means assumption or proposition. Hypothesis testing is an inferential statistics procedure that uses the sample data to assess the validity of two opposite theories about the population. The two theories are called the Null hypothesis(H0) Alternative hypothesis(H1)
Data Set Data which is used for hypothesis testing is taken in the form of dataset form the website https://data.gov.in/ Data Set : We have taken a data set which consists of people and represents gender and age of people who are suffering from heart disease. Link of the dataset : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kMIKCwT0oDHbJJdgIJFA5aLnGFH4xQcP/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=114056432269695987835&rtpof=true&sd=true
Total entries (population) : 200 Sample data taken : 50 We calculate the mean of 1) Total entries and 2) Sample data Standard deviation of Population i.e Total entries Null Hypothesis (H0): "There is no significant difference in the mean age between male and female patients with heart disease." Alternative Hypothesis (H1): "There is a significant difference in the mean age between male and female patients with heart disease."
Applying Z-test First, we need to calculate Population Mean , Sample Mean and Sample Standard Deviation Let the confidence level be : 95% n=50 (Sample mean data) Population mean of age : 53.74 Population mean of gender = 0.527 Sample mean of age : 53.28 Sample mean of gender = 0.5
Selection of testing hypothesis
Z = -0.33
Conclusion Hypothesis testing is a statistical method used to make decisions or draw conclusions about a population based on sample data. It involves assessing two opposing hypotheses—the null hypothesis (H0) and the alternative hypothesis (H1). By analyzing sample data, hypothesis testing helps determine which hypothesis is more likely to be true, thereby guiding decision-making and enabling generalization from a sample to a larger population. The outcome of a hypothesis test provides a basis for either rejecting the null hypothesis in favor of the alternative or failing to reject the null hypothesis, depending on the strength of the evidence.
