Introduction to Diodes and Diode Applications ECE 211: Electronics 1: Electronic Devices and Circuits Prepared By: Engr. Muel Fred Ruiz For BSECE SEP 2A and 2B

Diode A diode is a two-terminal electronic component that conducts current primarily in one direction; it has low resistance in one direction, and high resistance in the other.

Example #1 From the given circuit, solve for V R1 and I.

Example #2 From the given circuit, solve for V R1 and I.

Rectification Rectification is the conversion of alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This involves a device that only allows one-way flow of electric charge. As we have seen, this is exactly what a semiconductor diode does.

Rectifier

Positive Half-wave Rectifier

Negative Half-wave Rectifier

Example #3 From the given circuit, solve for V RL(DC) , V RL(rms) , I RL(DC) , and I RL(rms) .

Average Voltage (DC Voltage)

Example #4 From the given circuit, solve for V RL(DC) , V RL(rms) , I RL(DC) , and I RL(rms) .

Example #5 From the given circuit, solve for V RL(DC) , V RL(rms) , I RL(DC) , and I RL(rms) .

Example #10 From the given circuit, solve for V RL(DC) , V RL(rms) , I RL(DC) , and I RL(rms) .

Assignment #2 From the given circuit, solve for V RL(DC) , V RL(rms) , I RL(DC) , and I RL(rms) .

Wave Shaping Circuits

Clippers

Clippers Clippers are networks that employ diodes to “clip” away a portion of an input signal without distorting the remaining part of the applied waveform.

Example #11 From the given circuit, plot the output signal.

Example #12 From the given circuit, plot the output signal.

Clampers

Clampers A clamper is a network constructed of a diode, a resistor, and a capacitor that shifts a waveform to a different dc level without changing the appearance of the applied signal. Clamping networks have a capacitor connected directly from input to output with a resistive element in parallel with the output signal. The diode is also in parallel with the output signal but may or may not have a series dc supply as an added element.

Example #12 From the given circuit, plot the output signal.
