### Introduction to Graphic Design
Graphic design is a powerful art form that combines visuals and text to communicate messages effectively. It is an essential aspect of various industries, including advertising, marketing, publishing, and digital media. This essay delves into the multifaceted world of graphic design, exploring its history, principles, elements, tools, and contemporary trends.
### History of Graphic Design
The origins of graphic design can be traced back to ancient civilizations where symbols and images were used to convey information. The Egyptians used hieroglyphics, while the Chinese developed intricate calligraphy. The invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century revolutionized graphic design by making printed materials more accessible.
During the Industrial Revolution, advancements in technology facilitated mass production, leading to the rise of advertising and the need for visually appealing designs. The 20th century saw the emergence of modern graphic design, influenced by movements such as Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, and Constructivism. Designers like Paul Rand and Saul Bass set new standards with their innovative approaches to branding and visual communication.
### Principles of Graphic Design
Graphic design is governed by several principles that ensure effective communication and aesthetic appeal. These principles include:
1. **Balance**: Achieving visual equilibrium through the distribution of elements. It can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
2. **Contrast**: Creating emphasis by juxtaposing different elements such as colors, shapes, and textures.
3. **Alignment**: Arranging elements to create a coherent and organized layout.
4. **Repetition**: Reinforcing visual elements to create unity and consistency.
5. **Proximity**: Grouping related elements to establish a relationship and improve readability.
6. **Hierarchy**: Organizing elements to guide the viewer's attention and convey the importance of information.
7. **Space**: Utilizing negative space to enhance clarity and focus on the main elements.
### Elements of Graphic Design
Graphic design is built upon fundamental elements that work together to create compelling visuals. These elements include:
1. **Line**: Lines can be straight, curved, or angular and are used to define shapes, create patterns, and guide the viewer's eye.
2. **Shape**: Shapes are the building blocks of design and can be geometric (e.g., circles, squares) or organic (e.g., natural forms).
3. **Color**: Color evokes emotions and sets the tone of a design. Understanding color theory is crucial for effective design.
4. **Texture**: Texture adds depth and tactile quality to a design, making it more engaging.
5. **Typography**: The art of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and visually appealing.
6. **Image**: Photographs, illustrations, and graphics are used to convey messages and enhance visual interest.
7. **Space**: Also known as white space,

Composition and Layout in Graphic design Layout and composition are two different terms, but they work together harmoniously. The composition is something crucial in any art form, whether it is design, painting, music, photography, you name it. It refers to the elements that make up a certain design/piece of artwork. The layout is the organization of those elements, the way they are laid out and arranged. When your design has good layout and composition, it can enable your viewer to navigate through it easily and have a better understanding of it is about. Elements that are related should be grouped together, placed in near proximity. In the same way that being grouped together will show a relationship between elements, them being placed away from each other will show a lack of relationship. Proximity is used everywhere to define a relationship between elements. It helps designers by helping differentiate visual elements to reduce visual clutter and make design more comprehensible Proximity is also linked to white space and alignment. White space is space between your content that gives your content room to breathe and makes it easier to understand for the people viewing it. Having a good amount of white space is crucial for all compositions. White space is used everywhere. White space helps designers by making it easier for people viewing their image. White space is also linked to alignment is graphic design. To align something means to arrange it in a straight line or in correct relative positions. The key to using alignment is to use it consistently through your work. You can do it manually using grids and rulers, but all software tools you will be working with come with alignment tools. Alignment is used everywhere where there is proper arrangement on an image. Alignment helps designers by making them arrange it in a straight line correctly Alignment is also linked to white space and proximity in graphic design.

You can make contrast using different colours, sizes, fonts, etc.. With contrast, you can not only draw focus to a specific part of your design but the whole design in general by making it interesting using contrast. Contrast is used everywhere. It helps designers by creating relationships between and prioritise different design elements. Contrast is also linked to repetition in graphic design. Every good design project uses repetition. By repeating certain design elements like the colour palette, header style, you make your project coherent. It is useful for practical reasons as well. Repetition is used on posters and leaflets etc. Repetition helps designers by organising the information and guiding the reader through the pages. Repetition is also linked to contrast in graphic design.

There is white space in this image in the name Dwayne Johnson. The white space affects this image because it gives that effect to make it epic and inclining to the viewer. The white space is very appropriate for this image as the purpose is to engage the viewer to make them want to look at it. Example This image is of a movie yet to be released but will release in 1 month from now December of 2020 and this movie is called Wonder Woman 1984. There is alignment in this image in WW84. The use of the alignment is affected in this image as if there was no alignment this will look really unengaging and the viewer will click off it but since the text is aligned perfectly the viewer is engaged drastically. The alignment is very appropriate for this image as the purpose is to make the reader engaged and want to see over and over again and this image has fulfilled that purpose.
Experimentation with Composition and Layout I have experimented with layout and composition here and on the left you see iron man and superman not too far away from each other and each of them represent marvel and dc. The use of proximity to narrow the space between the superman and iron man pictures despite both the logos sharing the same purpose and both being equally relevant makes the viewer confused. On the right you see iron man and superman intertwined and both of them together represent marvel and dc combined sort of like joining forces.

Serif fonts are used for headings or other important pieces of writing. Serif fonts are made to make it easier to read very long or just long bodies of text at smaller sizes. Each typeface has its very own serif, x-height, stem, and variations of the thickness and proportions of these elements. Sans serif fonts does not have extending features called "serifs" at the end of strokes. S ans serif text typefaces/fonts can be used for annual reports and brochures. The clean lines and sharp edges are able to render out more clearly on a screen which increases legibility for users. The clean, crisp lines of sans serif fonts are the absolute main reason many web designers prefer this style of font for on-screen use.

In fact, you see it used all the time in both print and online media. It helps designers by increasing their effectiveness and ability to convert, and it can even improve the overall look of your designs when incorporated properly . Hierarchy also links to leading and kerning. Leading is the exact space that exists between type lines . Usually, leading is measured in points from baseline to another baseline. It is used in posters and much more. It helps designers by helping you can do to make your text look instantly better. Leading also links to hierarchy and kerning. Kerning involves adjusting your typography to look right rather than creating mathematically equal spacing. You would see it everywhere including posters and billboards. It helps designers spacing the text on their artwork or piece of writing. Kerning also links to both leading and hierarchy.

The typography in this image is the hierarchy. The use of typography effects the image in a way where you will see the word Venom first before anything else The typography is very appropriate for this image. Example This image is from a typography logo design website. The typography in this image is the leading. The use of typography effects the image in a way that you will see the word try first as it is at the top and it is bigger. The typography is very appropriate for this image.
Experimentation with Typography In this image, there is no affective or appealing typography being used. Many people who haven’t seen the movie or even heard about it wouldn’t know what this movie is. This is because there is no title in this image to help to the reader have the knowledge they need to know about this movie . In this image, I have added the title to give an idea of what the movie is called and what it is about. This typography is important as it is linked to the colour of his suit which is the gold part of his hot rod robotic suit. There is also hierarchy in this image to show that Iron Man is the main character of this movie as he covers the whole image. There is also leading and kerning in this image as between the letters there is a certain amount of space to give it effect. This is also a sans serif type font. https://www.google.com/ imgres?imgurl =https%3A%2F%2Fm.media-amazon.com%2Fimages%2FI%2F71lVAGaqBtL._AC_SL1000_.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FPosters-USA-Marvel-Original-Poster%2Fdp%2FB071RNNFSQ&tbnid=nLWfKxS6yFnefM&vet=12ahUKEwjn1PDQsfDyAhUN_4UKHWuLCk8QMygFegUIARDFAQ..i&docid=X5kn4ZGskQx52M&w=663&h=1000&q=iron%20man%20movie%20poster%20with%20title&ved=2ahUKEwjn1PDQsfDyAhUN_4UKHWuLCk8QMygFegUIARDFAQhttps://www.google.com/ imgres?imgurl =https%3A%2F%2Fi.etsystatic.com%2F22639391%2Fr%2Fil%2F3e2279%2F2377220646%2Fil_fullxfull.2377220646_fdjg.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.etsy.com%2Fie%2Flisting%2F828833505%2Firon-man-movie-poster-printable-file&tbnid= LJpBoTKoYFg-yM&vet =12ahUKEwjvksC2sfDyAhVJeRoKHTV_DF0QMygCegUIARDUAQ..i&docid=9lj69Cgiqx6OkM&w=1888&h=2500&q=iron%20man%20movie%20poster%20&ved=2ahUKEwjvksC2sfDyAhVJeRoKHTV_DF0QMygCegUIARDUAQ
Relevant Image Here Imagery in Graphic design Imagery is a very key part of design whether print or digital. The image helps users and viewers relate to the specific brand, and adds a human element to their experience. I mages have the ability to trigger lots of emotions, create trust and even modify our own behaviour. The imagery used on your/a website can have a direct impact on conversion rates - the use of human faces in web design have been shown to double conversion rates in some or a lot of cases . https://tse4.mm.bing.net/th/id/OIP.AUTTwbFRJQUlxhrKjuV5qwHaFj?pid=Api&rs=1

Use raster graphics when you want to add a good effect to an image such as a blur, texture, or other image manipulation is required. Raster helps designers edit and offers more control than vector graphics during editing. Raster links to vector in graphic design. Vector images are graphical representations of mathematical objects such as lines, curves, polygons and its like. You would see it being used for printing on paper and clothes. Vector images help designers by making it easier and faster to make a design project. Vector is also linked to raster in graphic design.
Imagery – Cropping and Resizing Definition of cropping and resizing in imagery Example of Cropping Image here Example Resizing Image here https://tse4.mm.bing.net/th/id/OIP.hB6CsWhVc5MytVpd2PNPFgHaFj?w=218&h=180&c=7&o=5&pid=1.7 https://tse2.mm.bing.net/th/id/OIP.ozi6oyagSYcDpj72lGEbhwHaE8?w=272&h=182&c=7&o=5&pi d=1.7 Cropping is the removal of unwanted outer areas from a photographic or illustrated image. You would you see it being used everywhere on posters, newspapers, etc. Cropping helps designers by removing unwanted outer areas of a photographic or properly illustrated image. Cropping also links to resizing in graphic design. Resizing is the non-trivial process of digital image scaling. It basically refers to the change of image dimensions– length and/or width and other scale of measurement (in inches) – of a photo. You would see it being used everywhere in posters, newspapers, etc. Resizing helps designers by making the image bigger or smaller depending on how they want it. Resizing also links to cropping in graphic design.
Imagery – Brightness and Contrast Definition of Brightness and Contrast in imagery Example of Brightness Image here Example Contrast Image here https://iristech.co/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/contrast-tips.png https://tse3.mm.bing.net/th/id/OIP.zLCK1nRr6jtAcFJQNZqFaAHaEK?w=305&h=180&c=7&o=5&pid=1.7 Brightness is the exact perception of how intense the light coming from a screen is. Brightness is used everywhere in whatever image you create. Brightness helps designers choosing how light or dark they want their image to be. Brightness links to contrast in graphic design. Contrast is very and really useful for creating a focal point, as well as giving objects greater visual weight and balancing the image. In my second experiment I improved my image by increasing the size of the image and placing it in the centre of the poster. Also, the image of the football was made bigger so that the viewer can see what the image is and the logo behind the image.
Final poster task Task 1: Using your knowledge about graphic design create two posters about how smoking causes cancer. You must include all the Line, tone, composition, colour, typography and imagery. Your poster is aimed at teenagers, make sure your poster is targeted at the appropriate age. Task 2 : evaluate your final poster, talk about why you have chosen that poster and why. Make sure you answer the questions below in full sentences, make sure you delete the questions after.
SMOKING CAN KILL! YOU SHOULD STOP NOW!!! I have chosen this poster on this slide to give an example of a bad poster with little information and something that is not appealing to people. The colour used on the poster is too dark and dull and doesn’t draw people’s attention towards the poster. The text is quite hard to read and is quite unclear. Also the grey instead of the red makes it look un-appealing and not eye-catching at all. Fonts like these should not be used to spread a message across as most people cannot see this clearly and it quite complicated.
SMOKING CAN KILL! YOU SHOULD STOP NOW!!! However, this poster is a lot better. This is because this poster is more appealing and eye-catching as it contains better images, more information and more relevant and bright colours. I have chosen an red outline colour as it suits with the idea that smoking can kill you and also cause your organs like your liver or lungs to deteriorate or damage and become unhealthy. Also I have used the Calibri font as it makes the writing stand out and gives of a sharp tone to the reader but also catching their attention making them want to read the whole thing. This one is better as the text is easier to read and is very clear. This simple font makes it look so much better and is great for spreading a message across as it has no fancy flicks or anything.
