“CML Management in Emerging Regions”
•Now an annual event
•A networking meeting with discussion on
the challenges and solutions of CML
treatment when resources are limited
The Emerging Regions Support and
Partnership (ERSAP) Program
Enhancing clinician’s knowledge, sharing best practice
and improving the access to diagnosis and testing
facilities in emerging economic regions
where this is most needed
ERSAP Preceptorship Program
Facilitate the sharing of best practice treatment between CML Centres of excellence and hematologists from
Emerging Regions
•Facilitate the sharing of best practice treatment between CML Centres of
excellence and hematologists from Emerging Regions
•Intensive 3-4 week preceptorships
•Preceptors are part of the clinical team
participating in seminars and laboratory
work where appropriate
•Preceptors come from all over the world
A successful first project
•2010
•20 Preceptorships at 5 CML centres of excellence:
•Positive Feedback
•Highly valued CML education, advancing knowledge of testing, increased overall
hematology knowledge, networking for future support
•2011
•26 Preceptorships at 8 CML centres of excellence
•Australia – Tim Hughes, France - Francois Mahon,
•Italy – Michele Baccarani, Spain - Juan Luis Steegmann,
•UK – Jane Apperley, UK - Richard Clark,
•USA – Jorge Cortes, USA – Michael Mauro
•2012
•Up to 30 preceptorships at 10 centres of excellence
•Open for applications www.cml-foundation.org
ERSAP Diagnosis and Testing Program
Increasing access to equipment and facilities to enhance the diagnosis and monitoring of CML patients
thus improving potential outcomes.
•Building partnerships to increase access to CML diagnostics in
emerging regions
•Facilitating sample shipments to reference laboratories
•Increasing capacity for local CML monitoring providing equipment,
training and resources under the mentorship of CML centres of
excellence
1) Through iCMLf funding and support
•iCMLf grants to increase capacity to diagnose and monitor CML patients
•Program open for centres in emerging regions
•Grants awarded on evaluation of submitted proposals
•Grants up to US $10,000 along with additional support from a partnering CML
centre of excellence
•Grants have been awarded to centres in Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nepal,
Nigeria and Uzbekistan
•Centres have the flexibility to run the program according to their local
situation with the ongoing support of a CML centre of excellence
2) Through iCMLf expert resources and long term
partnerships
•Blood screening across the pacific
•An example of sample shipment to increase access to diagnosis
and monitoring
•In September 2010 8 iCMLf advisors offered free PCR testing
•In July 2011 we had the the first opportunity to make use of this
•TMF approached us to help a patient in the Philippines
•1 patient developed to 30
•Developing a long term partnership between Adelaide and
Philippine General Hospital
3) Through iCMLf education and technical expertise
•iCMLf / MAX Diagnostic Project, Cepheid GeneXpert instrument
•Rapid molecular testing capability, across multiple diseases
•Goal: to utilize TB instruments in place in key countries to provide a diagnostic
solution in resource poor countries
•Project Status:
Identified 6 priority countries (Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uzbekistan, Honduras, Nepal and El Salvador)
Existing instruments in Ethiopia and Uzbekistan, limited cartridges for both sites
Training Ethiopian physician in Adelaide during ERSAP Preceptorship and Uzbekistan physician
in October through iCMLf diagnostics grant
•Project launched in Ethiopia October 6 and Uzbekistan October 26
