Identification of pneumonic patches

What is a Pneumonic Patch? A pneumonic patch is an area of lung consolidation detected by auscultation, typically indicating pneumonia or another respiratory infection.

Causes Bacterial pneumonia (e.g., Streptococcus pneumoniae)- Viral pneumonia (e.g., COVID-19)- Fungal pneumonia (e.g., Pneumocystis jirovecii )- Other respiratory infections

Signs and Symptoms:- Fever Cough Dyspnea (shortness of breath) Chest pain or discomfort Fatigue

Characteristics of a Pneumonic Patch 1. Dullness to percussion: The area is less resonant than surrounding lung tissue. 2. Bronchial breath sounds: Sounds are louder, harsher, and more high-pitched than normal vesicular breath sounds. 3. Increased vocal resonance: Voice sounds are more clear and louder than usual. 4. Crackles : May be present, especially during inspiration. 5. Decreased or absent breath sounds: In severe cases, breath sounds may be absent or significantly diminished.

Location: Typically found in the lower lung fields (5th-8th intercostal spaces)- Size: Can vary from a small patch to an entire lobe- Shape: Often irregular or patchy Border: May be poorly defined or have a clear demarcation Auscultation Findings
