IIT Roorkee's 1st Quiz for the fresher batch of 2023

Slide Content

1. X is a multinational chain with its headquarters in Bangalore, also known by its three letter abbreviation. The first outlet of X was set up in July 1996, by V. G. Siddhartha, and it currently has over a thousand outlets in India and around the world. (You’ve probably been to one in the past week) The company came into the limelight a few years ago, when Siddhartha went missing, and was then announced dead, which then brought into public attention the poor financial state of the company. What chain is being talked about?

2. X is a very popular phrase originating from an A merican sitcom Y, airing from 2005 to 2013, with a total of nine seasons.   X is said by the lead character multiple times throughout the series, and it gave origin to a meme in pop culture. It is a phrase used by someone feeling clever to add silly humour to a conversation.   Y's lead character has a mug gifted to himself on which "WORLD'S BEST ____“ (4) is written.   ID X and Y.

3. Although X’s fame from around mid 20 th century to present-day is due to certain activities he carried out in Europe, he also happened to be an (unsuccessful) artist.  He tried to sell several paintings and postcards when he lived in Vienna. He also attempted to gain admission to a University of Arts but had little success. Some of X’s works are given on the next slide His works have been deemed “ unfeeling ” and “ cold ”. ID X

4.* About 80 years ago, Nobel Prize winning physicist X, who you may or may not have heard of , gave a lecture series in three parts in Trinity college, Dublin. The topic, though was something completely unrelated to the topics you may associate him with. In his lecture series, he attempted to fuse physics and biology. X’s lectures went on to influence two other scientists, Watson and Crick to enter the field of molecular biology, and they went on to win the Nobel Prize themselves for their discovery of the structure of _ _ _. (3) FITB, and identify X, whom you would have learned about during JEE preparations.

5. Given in the next slide is a screenshot of a conversation between one of the most followed people on (formerly) Twitter, and a parody account of the same person. The exchange is referencing a certain “epic” event that was scheduled to happen in Italy, involving X, and another famous person Y, who is somewhat of a rival to X. Soon after it was announced, Y tried to cancel the event, saying that X was not serious enough about it. ID X and Y. (order important)

6. The recent rise in the use of these type of memes has been thanks to a movie that was released this year. It usually deals with something sad that is happening currently, but nothing can be done since it's a _____ _____ (5,5).

7. Nobody knows who said _____ _____ (5,5) first, but it is a two-word phrase that originated in the world of video games, as a “soft way of telling the opponent they are bad at the game.” Circa 2020, it went on to become a reaction meme used to ironically comment on people’s situations even when their abilities had nothing to do with their losses. “Sounds like a _____ _____”, or just “_____ _____” are two common alterations of the phrase. Identify the phrase. (No Part Points)

8.* In the 1870s, Thomas Hardy’s “A Pair of Blue Eyes”, was being published in a serialized manner (i.e., in short episodes). At the end of one of those episodes, one of the main characters, Henry Knight is depicted as hanging off a rock face , leaving the reader with no idea of whether he survives or not. This abrupt ending gives the rise to a word meaning ‘to be left in suspense’ . What word is being talked about?

11. The first logo of X was a centaur, a stylized version of Sagittarius shooting an arrow in a circle, representing the wheel of Konark. The logo was chosen by the founder and introduced in 1948 and represented them until 2000, when they adopted a new logo. X was originally a private entity, before being nationalized in 1953. Recently, X was picked up again by its original “owner.
