Imaging and Design for The Online Environment Lesson 6
Graphics and layout Computer graphics are visual representations of data made on a computer and is displayed on a computer screen or monitor. They can be a single image or series of images called video.
On the other hand, layout is the arrangement of graphic elements on a page. An effective graphics and layout contribute to the efficiency of website.
Balance It describes the placement of elements of equal weight on the page. The three types of balance are symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. Principles of Graphics and layout Principles of Graphics and layout
Symmetrical Balance
Asymmetrical Balance
Radial Balance
2. Movement It describes the flow of elements on the page. Visual elements guide the viewers’ eyes around the page.
3. Emphasis An area in the design that catches viewer’s attention. The area may appear different in size, color, texture or shape.
4. Pattern Builds course. It builds familiarity and organizes design for trouble-free viewing.
5. Proportion Conveys stability. It involves scaling of various elements to create a coherent design.
6. Variety Reaps attention. It adds flavor to the design, making it more interesting and engaging. Without variety, a design can very quickly become monotonous, causing the user to lose interest.
7. Repetition makes design aware. It describes the consistent and balanced repetition of a design or element. Repetition brings consistency and flow to the design.
Information graphics or infographics are used to represent information, statistical data, or knowledge in a graphical manner usually done in a creative way to attract the viewer’s attention. infographics
Graphs and Charts as Infographics Graphs and charts are representation of data (mostly numeric) through graphics. Their uses depend on what you want to show or report. The following are some of the charts and their uses.
Column charts – These are primarily used in comparing sets of data. They visualize the difference between values in a table and show rate of change over time.
Line graphs – These are similar with bar graphs in terms of use, with a difference that line graphs are more suitable in showing trends.
Pie charts – These are circular statistical graphical representation of proportion or percentage.
Principles in making an Effective Infographic Design 1. Be Unique 2. Make It Simple 3. Be Creative 4. Communicate the data clearly
