DO INDONESIAN WORKERS SEE GENERATIVE AI AS A HELP OR A THREAT? UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF GENERATIVE AI ON MOTIVATION AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT PROF. LEE CHEOL KI 01 START Global TVET Management 2024 Presented By: Reza Fajarsyah [email protected]

A recent survey by Statista Consumer Insights reveals varying perceptions of using AI applications in daily life around the world. Interest in AI is growing worldwide, especially in emerging economies. In 2024, 41% of Indonesians said they were excited about using AI in daily life, placing the country among the top four globally. This rising enthusiasm reflects a growing openness to AI, setting the stage for how it may transform the way people live and work in Indonesia. 02 Organizational Behavior Management GENERATIVE AI IN 2024

03 WHY ARE THEY INTERESTED IN GEN AI Most users are interested in Generative AI because it helps them answer questions (68%) and support creative tasks like brainstorming (54%), photo editing, and content generation. Fewer users rely on it for technical tasks like coding (18%) or writing lyrics (18%). Organizational Behavior Management

04 GEN AI AMONG INDONESIAN WORKERS Generative AI is rapidly reshaping how people work across the globe, and Indonesia is no exception. Over the past year, 84% of Indonesian workers have used GenAI at least once in the workplace, a figure that stands notably above the global average. Moreover, more than 40% of Indonesian workers now rely on it regularly, either daily or weekly. These trends reveal strong engagement with GenAI among Indonesian workers, but they also raise an important question. 05 Generative AI is changing work, but it’s unclear whether employees feel empowered by it or threatened in their jobs. Do Indonesian workers see GenAI as a help or a threat? To understand employees’ perceptions toward GenAI adoption in Indonesian companies To explore how the adoption of Generative AI affects motivation and employees’ performance in Indonesian Companies First Objective Second Objective 01 02 Organizational Behavior Management RESEARCH PROBLEM & OBJECTIVES

OVERVIEW Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is a form of AI that creates new content such as text, images, audio, or code by learning from existing data. It uses advanced models to produce human-like outputs. Well-known examples include ChatGPT, Gemini, and GitHub Copilot. GENERATIVE AI 06 Organizational Behavior Management Source : Dhamani, N. (2024). Introduction to generative AI. Simon and Schuster.

OVERVIEW Motivation refers to the internal processes that initiate, direct, and sustain goal-oriented behaviors. In the workplace context, motivation influences how much effort individuals are willing to put into their tasks and how persistent they are in achieving objectives. It can be driven by intrinsic factors, such as personal growth or satisfaction, and extrinsic factors, such as rewards or recognition. OVERVIEW Employee performance refers to how well an individual carries out their job responsibilities and contributes to organizational goals. It encompasses both the quality and quantity of work produced, as well as how effectively employees use their skills, time, and resources. High performance is typically associated with meeting or exceeding job expectations, demonstrating initiative, and maintaining consistent productivity and effectiveness in assigned roles. 09 ORGANIZATION PERCEPTION FOR GENERATIVE AI FINDINGS While 30% of organizations expect little to no change in workforce size, 43% anticipate a decrease, mostly between 3–10%. Only a small portion foresee workforce growth, showing that many companies still view GenAI more as a disruptor than an enabler. Organizational Behavior Management

10 FINDINGS EMPLOYEE PERCEPTION FOR GENERATIVE AI Most employees see Generative AI as beneficial. 90% say it helps them learn new skills, and over 85% believe it boosts creativity and improves the quality of their work. However, concerns remain. 58% fear increased bias in the workplace, 41% worry about misleading information, and 37% think GenAI could negatively change the nature of their work. 11 Most employees believe GenAI will make their work more efficient (76%) and may also increase their workload (58%). At the same time, with 68% expecting improved job security and 60% anticipating higher salaries. 12 H1: Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has a positive impact on the Work Motivation (WM) of formal workers. H2: Work Environment (WE) has a positive impact on the Work Motivation (WM) of formal workers. H3: Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has a positive impact on the Work Motivation (WM) of formal workers through the mediation of Work Environment (WE). Organizational Behavior Management Source : Dharmawan, A. P., & Hartantono, N. (2024, August). Role of Generative Artificial Intelligence and Work Environment on the Motivation of Workers. In 2024 3rd International Conference on Creative Communication and Innovative Technology (ICCIT) (pp. 1-5). IEEE. The regression results show that all hypotheses are supported. Both Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) and Work Environment (WE) have a significant positive effect on formal workers' Work Motivation (WM). Additionally, the Work Environment mediates the positive influence of GAI on Work Motivation. Thus, GAI and the work environment together significantly enhance work motivation. Effect of work motivation and job satisfaction on employee performance: Mediating role of employee engagement. Problems and Perspectives in Management, 19(3), 162. Based on the table, work motivation has a significant positive impact on employee performance in Indonesia. The Original Sample value is 0.070, with a T-statistic of 2.173 and a P-value of 0.030 (below 0.05), indicating statistical significance. In short, higher motivation leads to better employee performance, highlighting the importance for organizations to boost motivation to improve productivity. FINDINGS Impact of Indonesian Workers’ Motivation on Employee Performance

14 Organizational Behavior Management The conceptual model illustrates that Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) influences both the Work Environment and Work Motivation. In turn, the Work Environment also affects Work Motivation, which ultimately impacts Employee Performance. This framework highlights the relationship between Generative AI in enhancing work motivation and employee performance FINDINGS Impact of Generative AI on Work Motivation and Employee Performance in Indonesia

15 IMPLICATION To maintain work engagement, leaders must communicate AI integration clearly, showing that AI is a tool to support, not replace employees. HR should provide reskilling programs and create an environment where employees feel empowered using GenAI tools. For Organizations / HR Practitioners The study highlights the need to explore work engagement and job satisfaction in relation to technological disruption like GenAI. Future OBM research should examine the long-term emotional and motivational effects of AI in different industries and cultures. AI implementation in the workplace should be accompanied by national guidelines ensuring ethical use of AI that protects workers' roles and mental well-being. Government can design public AI literacy campaigns and vocational upskilling programs to help workers adapt and feel secure in the AI era. 16 CONCLUSION GenAI positively influences employee performance through the mediation of work motivation. When employees feel motivated, supported by both GenAI and a positive work environment, they tend to perform better and contribute more effectively to organizational goals. Organizational Behavior Management Most Indonesian workers perceive Generative AI (GenAI) as a helpful tool rather than a threat. While concerns about job changes and misinformation exist, the majority believe GenAI enhances creativity, learning, and efficiency, indicating generally positive perceptions.
