Importance of Statistics in chemistry field By AfifaAnjum SUBJECT STatistics

Statistics Statistics is a mathematical body of science that pertains to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data, or as a branch of mathematics. Statistics deals with every aspect of data, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments. For Example: - An example of statistics is a report of numbers saying how many followers of each religion there are in a particular country.

Two main statistical methods are used in data analysis: Descriptive statistics, Which summarize data from a sample using indexes such as the mean or standard deviation, inferential statistics, which draw conclusions from data that are subject to random variation (e.g., observational errors, sampling variation ).

Importance in chemistry Statistics is important in chemistry , especially in Analytical chemistry because it helps in the presentation of problems in data analysis and demonstrating steps to solve them. Modern analytical chemistry is concerned with the detection, identification, and measurement of the chemical composition of unknown substances using existing instrumental techniques, and the development or application of new techniques and instruments. It is a quantitative science, meaning that the desired result is almost always numeric. We need to know that there is 55 μg of mercury in a sample of water, or 20 mM glucose in a blood sample.

Statistics play a vital role in researches. For Example, Statistics can used as in data collection, analysis, interpretation, explanation and presentation. Use of statistics will guide researchers in research for proper characterization, summarization, presentation and interpretation of the result of research.

Statistics provides a platform for research as to; How to go about your research, either to consider a sample or the whole population, the Techniques to use in data collection and observation, how to go about the data description (using measure of central tendency). Statistics is very important when it comes to the conclusion of the research. In this aspect the major purposes of statistics are to help us understand and describe phenomena in our world and to help us draw reliable conclusions about those phenomena.

It is especially useful in Chemistry research work. We widely use statistics terms i.e., Mean Mode Median etc. In making thesis. Without Statistics research work cannot be done goodly. Also, statistic tables are helpful in research work when we need to show our results in a tabular form. Statistics lowers the work load and make our results more accurate .

Quantitative results are obtained using devices or instruments that allow us to determine the concentration of a chemical in a sample from an observable signal. There is always some variation in that signal over time due to noise and/or drift within the instrument.
