NAME

PHILOSOPHY

Indian Philosophy Numerous philosophical systems developed on the Indian subcontinent, including both orthodox ( astika ) systems like Nyaya, Vaisheshika , Samkhya, Yoga, Mimamsa , and Vedanta, and unorthodox ( nastika ) systems such as Buddhism and Jainism.

Indian Philosophy: Historical Periods 1. Prelogical (pre- Mauryan to Mauryan periods) 2. Logical (1st–11th century CE) 3. Ultralogical (11th–18th century CE) The prelogical stage is from c. 321–185 BCE, while the logical period was most prominent during the Gupta era.

Advaita (Nondualism) Originated with Gaudapada’s 7th-century commentary on the Mandukya Upanishad. Sankara in the 8th century argued that the world is unreal and only Brahman is the ultimate reality. Advaita remains influential in modern Hindu thought.

Yoga One of the six orthodox systems, better known for its practical aspect. The goal of Yoga is to reverse the evolution of the world and attain liberation. It involves eight stages of practice, starting with ethical preparations and ending with concentrated states of awareness.
