A Symbol of
Identity and Unity
On September 26, 1860, President Gabriel García Moreno decreed the
adoption of the tricolor flag inspired by Venezuelan leader Francisco de
Miranda. The decision symbolized unity and sovereignty after years of
political instability. The colors yellow, blue, and red represent the wealth of the
land, the ocean that connects Ecuador to the world, and the blood shed by
heroes in search of independence."The flag is the living flame of our history, a
sign of unity that guides us toward the
future." At the end of the 19th
century, after years of
political division,
adopting the tricolor
became a unifying act.
The flag embodied the
hope of a people
determined to build a
sovereign and just
nation.
The Struggle for
National IdentityThe Ecuadorian flag has
transformed from colonial
standards to its current
tricolor design, officially
adopted in the 1900
Constitution. Today, Flag
Day is celebrated in
schools with ceremonies
where students pledge
loyalty to the flag,
honoring justice, freedom,
and solidarity.
