NOISE
POLLUTION
ORIGIN
01

What is Noise Pollution?
DEFINITION
Noise pollution refers to the excessive or disturbing noise that interferes with normal activities,
such as working, sleeping, commuting, conversing, etc.
-Detrimental effects on human health and well-being;
-Negatively impacts quality of life;
-Disrupts ecosystems;
-Often overlooked due to being intangible.

Where does noise pollution originate from?
UNDERSTANDING ITS ORIGINS
Noise pollution may come from various sources, such as:

●TRANSPORTATION: Road traffic, airplanes, trains.
●CONSTRUCTION AND INFRASTRUCTURE: Construction sites, roadworks.
●URBANIZATION: residential, commercial, recreational activities.
●COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES: Restaurants, bars, entertainment venues.
●NATURAL PHENOMENA: Thunderstorms, volcanic eruptions, and wildlife.

NOISE POLLUTION
CONSEQUENCES
02

Consequences on Human Health
Physical
-Adverse Cardiovascular Outcomes
-Heightened Blood pressure
-Increased heart rate
-Elevated levels of stress hormones
-Hypertension
-Stroke

-Sleep Disruption leading to
-Impaired immune function
-Susceptibility to Infections
-Impaired Cognitive Function

Consequences on Human Health
Mental
Poor academic performance for children and work efficiency for adults
-Attention, memory, problem-solving skills
Worsens mental health
-Anxiety
-Irritability
-Depression
-Frustration
-Helplessness

Consequences on the Environment
TERRESTRIAL WILDLIFE
-Increase pollination for hummingbirds
-Effects ecosystem dynamics
-Plant seed dispersal reduced
-Alters ecosystem
-Insect Cues Altered
-Destabilizes their behavior

Consequences on the Environment
AQUATIC WILDLIFE
-Fish tissues damaged
-Crabs have cues disrupted
-Fish social interactions shifting
-Ecosystem changing due to noise

Source of Noise Pollution in Montreal
Construction Sites.
1.Abundance on the island of Montreal.
a.Types of sites ;
i.New Infrastructure (Roads, Buildings, Bridges)
ii.Renovations/Repairs,
iii.Demolition.

2.Proximity to Neighbourhoods.
3.Lack of protection for surroundings.

Best type of material ;
a)MPPs,
b)Plastic based Foams.

The Proposed Plan: Acoustic Panels
The UrbanSilence team designed Acoustic Panels.
Material ; Waterproof and Rust Proof
-MDF or plywood, Steel MPP and Acoustic Foam.
-Dimension of the entire panel ; 4ftx6ft; thickness of 3 inches.
Installation and Production ;
-Produce ahead of time, or according to site specifications.
-Material will always be on hand.
-Sized to maximize sound absorption.

Partners ; HLC Metal Parts Ltd, Silentium Group, Tricoya

The Proposed Plan: Sustainability
Reusability and sustainability ;
Made of 100% recycled material
-Stored, cleaned and Reused.
-Waste will be cleaned and recycled.
-Lightweight

The Proposed Plan: Acoustic Panel Options
Two versions of our Acoustic Panels ;
1.Full Panel ;
●Includes ;
1)Metal Micro-Perforated Panels,
2)Acoustic Foam Absorber,
3)Moisture Resistant MDF
2.Partial Panel ; Utilizes on site Plywood.
●Includes ;
1)Metal Micro-Perforated Panels,
2)Foam Absorber

The Proposed Plan: Metal Micro-Perforated Panel
Made of a rust proof steel ; Galvanized Steel.

Design of MPP’s ;
1)Thousands of 1mm holes for sound to pass through.

2)Bolted into the MDF or Plywood.

3)Sheet size will be 4ftx6ft ;
a)Thickness of 1mm.

Manufacturer ; HLC Metal Parts Ltd

Delivered in a roll of 50ft.

The Proposed Plan: Schedule

The Proposed Plan: Budget
Task Objective Timeframe Associated Costs
Research Analyze job requirements &
perform acoustic analysis
1 week $18000 - 36000
Panel Production & Modular
Design
Build and design the modular
panels for specific job-sites
3.5 Week
(3 - 4 Days)
$ 95000 - 130000
($36 000 - 70 000)
Installation Instal acoustic panels around the
job sites & at resonance points
3 Days $4000 - 6000
Maintenance Provide maintenance for
defective and/or damaged panels
Through construction work $10000 - 16000
Removal & Storage Removing panels and transport
to storage site
2 Days $3000 - 5000

CONCLUSION
04

Summary
