Planet2025 Network emerged from activities of
the Eco-Insurance Initiative, a public private
partnership project initiated in 2002 by
•TransGlobal Ventures, Inc. — an eco-finance
and venture development company based
in Washington DC, USA, in cooperation
with the
•Institute for Environmental Security —
a non-profit organization based in
The Hague, the Netherlands.
Planet2025 Network initiatives are led by its
founder, Steven Lovink, a social entrepreneur
with international operating background in

21st Century Risk
Management
Planet2025 Network activities build upon
the main principles of Eco-Insurance for a
Sustainable Future(2003), a target-based
policy framework and financial mechanism
for managing 21st Century ecologically
originated risks. Its objective is to manage
humanity’s ecological footprint and strengthen
environmental, economic, and human security.
The approach urges decision makers to agree on:
•a sustainable size of humanity’s global
ecological footprint
•the time to reach this target
•the premium, fee or tax to compensate for
overuse of the planet’s regenerative capacity
As a policy framework, it provides the essential
building blocks for people, organizations, and
nations to equitably shrinkand sharehumanity’s
ecological footprint over time. Implementation
may be mandatory or voluntary. The adoption of
market-based instruments has the potential to
accelerate the necessary transition to sustainability.
Life Insurance for the Globe
Eco-Insurance seeks to introduce an essential
financial safety valve into our global economic
system. Our ecological debt now exceeds 2.7
years of ecological production and continues to
accumulate. To the extent sustainable, ecological
footprint targets are not met, premium income
(fees or taxes) generated will offset mounting
risks by automatically capitalizing a global
community investment program to maintain and
restore the globe’s life-supporting ecosystems —
nature’s capital.
Planet2025 initiatives focus program and outreach
activities on creative voluntary approaches to
implementation. Even so, mandatory targets may
well become a necessity if humanity’s development
path maintains its unsustainable course.
A Prudent Investment
Substantial investments are required to make a
successful transition to a sustainable future, but
the returns appear to be well worth it.
The Stern Review (2006), an analysis of The
Economics of Climate Change, recommends one
percent of world GDP be invested per year to
avoid worst consequences of climate change.
Should we fail to do so, we might lose five to
twenty percent of world GDP per year.
Few private or public investments offer such clear
environmental and social benefits as well as
impressive financial returns.
