Introduction 01. Table of contents 02. Stream of Consciousness 03. Example of Bollywood Cinema 04. Conclusion

Stream of consciousness is a narrative technique portraying a character's continuous thoughts and feelings without a structured plot. In Bollywood, "Tamasha" and "Dear Zindagi" delve into human emotions and identity. Similarly, "Koi Jaane Na" and "The Lunchbox" offer glimpses into characters' inner thoughts. In literature, George Orwell's "1984" and O. Henry's "The Last Leaf" employ this technique, adding psychological depth to the narrative. Introduction

"The stream of consciousness, flowing like a river, with thoughts and feelings constantly shifting and changing." (James) Despite the fact that the stream of consciousness technique occupies an important position in twentieth-century fiction, there is no general agreement. (Bowling 333) “Consciousness, then, does not appear to itself chopped up in bits. Such words as 'chain' or 'train' do not describe it fitly as it presents itself in the first instant. It is nothing jointed: it flows. A 'river' or a 'stream' are the metaphors by which it is most naturally described. In talking of it hereafter, let is call it the stream of thought, of consciousness, or of subjective life. (James 1890, p. 233). I want to call your attention to the discontinuous character of thought?the complete inappropriateness of James' expression 'the stream of thought'. (Geach 1969, p. 34)” (Soteriou 543) Stream of Consciousness

Geach contested William James' notion of the 'stream' of thought, asserting that while sensory processes may exhibit a stream-like quality, the same cannot be said for conscious thought. This debate brings attention to the differentiation between cognitive and sensory experiences, emphasizing the distinction between the two. Furthermore, it ties into ongoing discussions within the ontology of mind, particularly regarding the temporal attributes of mental phenomena and their categorization. Geach's argument underscores the significance of temporal aspects in comprehending the nature of the mind, highlighting their relevance in philosophical discourse. The implications of this debate extend to current deliberations on perceptual experience, notably concerning the interplay between content and phenomenal character.

Ved's childhood portrayal of various characters reveals his rich and imaginative inner world. Ved and Tara's spontaneous actions in Corsica defy societal norms, showcasing their true selves and stream of consciousness. Ved's monologue exposes his conflict with societal expectations, demonstrating his inner turmoil and desire for authenticity. Ved's on-stage performance intertwines reality and fantasy, illustrating his journey of self-discovery through a stream of consciousness narrative. Ved's acceptance of his true passion signifies the resolution of his internal conflicts and the triumph of his stream of consciousness. (Ali) Example of Bollywood Movie

Color Symbolize Feelings Red often represents one of two drastically different meanings: anger and violence or passion and love. Depending on which meaning the creators intended, red objects or lighting could suggest that something dangerous is about to happen or something romantic and/or sensual. Context matters greatly for the color red. (“Color Symbolism in Movies: What Do Colors Mean in Film?”) In the song 'Agar Tum Saath Ho', Ved is dressed in the colors of the brain or colorless whereas Tara is dressed in Red which is the color associated with the heart which also symbolizes the constant tussle between the brain and heart. (“From Kahaani to Tamasha: Movie Costumes and Their Hidden Meanings”)

Kaira's inner turmoil regarding life and relationships is vividly portrayed in the opening scene through rapid cuts, illustrating her stream of consciousness. Introspective discussions with her therapist, Dr. Jehangir Khan, serve as windows into Kaira's thoughts and emotions, unfolding her stream of consciousness. Through dreams and flashbacks, Kaira's subconscious fears and desires emerge, revealing her stream of consciousness narrative. Solitary moments on the beach provide Kaira with space for introspection, where her stream of consciousness unfolds amidst her inner conflicts. Kaira's ultimate realization of the significance of self-love and acceptance marks the culmination of her journey of self-discovery and stream of consciousness. (Shinde) Example of Bollywood Movie

Example of Bollywood Movie The daily exchange of notes between Ila and Saajan becomes a conduit for their innermost thoughts and emotions, embodying a stream of consciousness. Scenes of Saajan eating alone and reflecting on his life highlight his internal dialogue and stream of consciousness amidst loneliness and longing. Flashbacks to Ila's past and Saajan's memories offer insights into their inner worlds, unveiling their stream of consciousness and emotional depth. The heartfelt letters shared between Ila and Saajan provide a platform for expressing their deepest desires and vulnerabilities, illustrating a stream of consciousness. The ambiguous ending, where Ila and Saajan’s future remains uncertain, underscores the complexity of their stream of consciousness and leaves room for interpretation. (Batra)

Winston's diary entries reveal his dissent against the Party's oppression. Moments of reflection show Winston contemplating society and his role in it. Dreams and nightmares reflect Winston's fears and desires. Inner monologues question the Party's propaganda and Winston's conformity. Final thoughts reveal Winston's realization of the Party's tyranny and his own fate. (Orwell) Example of Novel

Example of Short Story O. Henry's stories are known for unexpected, ironic endings. Character interactions reveal thoughts and emotions indirectly. Narrators occasionally offer insights into characters' minds. Symbolism and imagery hint at characters' internal states. (Henry)

Conclusion While some works like "1984" and O. Henry's short stories may not extensively employ the stream of consciousness technique, they nonetheless offer insights into characters' inner worlds through various narrative devices. Whether it's through diary entries, dialogue, or unexpected endings, these works provide glimpses into the complexities of human thought and emotion, enriching the reading experience and inviting readers to contemplate the intricacies of the human psyche.
