Instruction Set : Computer Architecture

This presentation describes what INSTRUCTION SET is, its basic definition, importance and its role in computer architecture along with how the architecture of computer depends on the INSTRUCTION SET.

3. INSTRUCTION SET (in Layman’s terms) Instruction set refers to the group of large number of bits which represents the functions that are needed to be performed by the computers/devices.

4. What Instruction Set actually is…?? An  Instruction Set Architecture (ISA)  is a part of a computer that contains the commands for the processor to function.  It can be defined as the design of a computer from the programmer’s perspective. It describes the design of a computer in terms of the basic operations it must support.

Dependency of Computer Architecture on Instruction Set The architecture of the computer system has some dependency on the effective length of the instruction set. i.e. REDUCED INSTRUCTION SET COMPUTERS (RISC) have fixed effective length of instruction set whereas in COMPLEX INSTRUCTION SET COMPUTERS (CISC) the effective length of instruction set varies.

11. INSTRUCTION SET : Importance? The instruction set is the part of a computer that pertains to programming, which is more or less machine language. It provides commands to the processor, to tell it what it needs to do . The general purpose of an instruction set architecture centers on defining how the processor is controlled by the software. Fundamentally, it serves as a bridge, as well as a boundary between software and hardware .

12. Conclusion The clear and in-depth knowledge of INSTRUCTION SET ARCHITECTURE is a fundamental requirement for building FAST , EFFICIENT computers/devices that OPTIMIZE MEMORY and process resources.
