2.1.2 OVERVIEW OF THE GLOBAL CARBON INDUSTRY
Globally, the carbon manufacturing industry plays a central role in industrial and
environmental sustainability. Major producers include China, India, the United States, Japan,
and European nations, which supply a wide range of carbon materials for different applications.
The activated carbon market, in particular, has grown rapidly due to rising concerns
about water pollution, air purification, and industrial emissions. Similarly, carbon black is
extensively used in tire and rubber production, while graphite is essential in batteries,
lubricants, and electrical applications.
The global activated carbon market was valued at over USD 4.6 billion in 2024 and is
projected to grow steadily due to industrialization and stricter environmental laws. The carbon
black market is estimated to exceed USD 15 billion by 2030, driven by the automotive sector’s
growth.
Modern carbon industries are moving toward energy-efficient, low-emission
manufacturing systems, using renewable carbon sources and recycling waste by-products.
Continuous R&D investments are being made to develop graphene-based materials, which hold
immense potential in electronics, energy storage, and nanotechnology.
Despite global challenges like raw material cost fluctuations and trade restrictions, the
carbon industry remains a cornerstone of industrial growth, providing solutions for cleaner
environments and sustainable technologies.
2.1.3 CARBON INDUSTRY IN INDIA
The carbon industry in India is one of the country’s most important industrial sectors,
supporting several other industries such as steel, water purification, chemicals, and energy.
India is among the leading producers and exporters of carbon-based materials like activated
carbon, carbon black, graphite, and industrial charcoal. The country benefits from the
availability of natural raw materials such as coconut shells, coal, and wood, along with a large
pool of skilled and semi-skilled workers.
In India, the southern states -especially Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh play
a key role in activated carbon production because of their access to raw materials like coconut
shells.

7

The carbon black industry is driven mainly by the tire and rubber sectors, while graphite
and electrode manufacturing support steel and power industries. India exports carbon materials
to over 90 countries, with major markets in the Middle East, Japan, and Europe.
The Indian government has also taken several steps to promote this sector through
initiatives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, encouraging local manufacturing

2.7 DEPARTMENTS
2.7.1 PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT
Nova Carbons India Pvt. Ltd. specializes in the manufacturing of high-quality activated
carbon products, primarily derived from coconut shells. The production process is divided into
several key departments, each responsible for specific stages of manufacturing to ensure product
quality and efficiency.
PROCESS FLOW OF CARBON PRODUCTION IN NOVA CARBONS

PROCESS DESCRIPTION

• Coconut shell, the basic raw material is Crushed, Screened for required mesh size.
• Granulated coconut shell is fed to Continuous Rotary Kiln for Carbonisation in the
absence of air.
• For initial start-up for process heat LPG is used and the raw material gets carbonised
by indirect heating technology.
• Maintain required process temperature and pressure in the Rotary kiln.
• Flue gas generated is incinerated with part of incinerated flue gas returned to Rotary
Kiln and remaining gas going to Waste Heat Recovery Boiler for generation of Steam
and Power.
• The Charcoal discharged from Rotary Kiln is cooled by means of rotary cooler, water
quenching conveyor and collected in bulk bags and utilised for Activated Carbon production.

16

➢ Raw Material Procurement and Storage:
This department is responsible for sourcing and storing high-quality coconut shells,
which serve as the primary raw material for activated carbon production. They ensure
that the materials meet the required specifications and are stored under optimal conditions
to maintain quality.
➢ Carbonization Unit:
In this unit, the coconut shells undergo a high-temperature process in a controlled
environment to convert them into charcoal. This step is crucial as it determines the base
structure of the activated carbon.
➢ Activation Unit:

The charcoal produced in the carbonization unit is then subjected to steam activation at
high temperatures. This process enhances the porous structure of the charcoal, increasing
its surface area and making it suitable for adsorption applications.
➢ Crushing and Sieving Department:

After activation, the carbon is cooled and then crushed into various particle sizes. Sieving
ensures that the activated carbon meets specific mesh size requirements for different
applications.
➢ Impregnation and Customization Unit:

In this department, the activated carbon may undergo further treatment to enhance its
adsorption properties for specific applications. This can include impregnation with
chemicals to tailor the carbon's performance.
➢ Quality Control and Testing Laboratory:

Quality control is integral to the production process. This department conducts rigorous
testing to ensure that the activated carbon meets the required standards and specifications
before it is released for packaging and shipment.

17

➢ Packaging and Dispatch Department:
Once the activated carbon passes quality checks, it is packaged into various forms such as
bags, drums, or bulk containers, depending on customer requirements. The department
ensures that the products are properly labeled and dispatched to customers in a timely
manner.
The production departments at Nova Carbons India Pvt. Ltd. work in a coordinated
manner to ensure high-quality activated carbon products. From raw material procurement to
packaging, each department plays a vital role in maintaining efficiency, quality, and timely

environment of a company. It helps identify the intensity of competition and the profitability
potential in an industry by examining five key forces: threat of new entrants, bargaining power
of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, threat of substitutes, and industry rivalry. This
analysis provides insights into the market position of Nova Carbons India Pvt. Ltd. and its
strategic challenges.

25

• Threat of New Entrants
Moderate
The activated carbon industry requires specialized machinery, quality raw materials
(like coconut shells), and technical expertise. While these barriers exist, the market is
growing, and new companies may enter with sufficient investment, making the threat
moderate.
• Bargaining Power of Suppliers
Low to Moderate
Suppliers mainly provide coconut shells and chemicals. Since coconut shells are widely
available and multiple suppliers exist, the bargaining power of suppliers is relatively
low. However, for specialized chemicals or additives, supplier influence may increase
slightly.
• Bargaining Power of Buyers
Moderate
Customers include industrial clients needing activated carbon for filtration, purification,
or chemical applications. Large buyers may negotiate better prices, but the high quality
and consistency of Nova Carbon products reduce their bargaining power to a moderate
level.
• Threat of Substitutes
Moderate
Substitute products like synthetic carbon or alternative filtration materials exist, but
they may not match the performance or cost-effectiveness of high-quality activated
carbon. Therefore, the threat of substitutes is moderate.
• Industry Rivalry
High
The activated carbon industry has several established domestic and international
players. Competition is high due to similar products, quality standards, and the need to
maintain pricing and market share. Companies compete on product quality, technology,
and customer service.
