What is a drug?
Any substance other than food that
changes the structure or functions of the
body or mind.
Those drugs which have been
studied, tested, approved, and controlled
by the Food and Drug Administration
(F.D.A.). This means they are considered
safe and effective if used as directed.
Legal Drugs:
Medicine:
Prescriptions: Doctor assigned, such as
antibiotics, pain relievers, etc.
Over the Counter (OTC): Used for minor illness; such
as a cold, flu, and headache. No prescription is
needed. Use the directions on the package
Vaccinations:
Also called immunizations
Examples include measles, mumps, and rubella or
diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus.
Legal Drug examples:
Alcohol:
Legal for people 21 and older
Law prohibits driving under the influence, disorderly
conduct in public, and under age use
Michigan has a zero tolerance law for minors
Selling to minors is illegal
Tobacco:
Legal for people 18 and older
Laws involve restrictions on where smoking can occur
Selling to minors is illegal

Confusion, loss of coordination may occur
Tolerance, physical and psychological
dependence can develop
Regular use may cause damage to the
lungs, heart, brain, and reproduction system
Possible Effects of Cannabis
Hallucinogens causes a hallucinations. Hallucinations
involve sensing things while awake that appear to be
real, but instead have been created in the mind.
L.S.D. (Lysergic Acid Diethylamide) –acid is a slang term
P.C.P. (Phencyclidine) –angel dust is a slang term

Hallucinations, panic may occur
Tolerance develops
Effects may recur (“flash backs”) even after use is
discontinued

Possible Effects of Hallucinogens
Inhalant abuse is inhaling substances and fumes in
order to get a chemical reaction in the brain .This
means people are using common household products
to purposely get high illegally.

Stimulants speed up action of the central
nervous system. Stimulants raise heart rate and

With Cocaine –Confusion, depression, hallucinations may
occur. Physical dependence can develop. Effects are
unpredictable –convulsions, coma, and death are possible.
With Nicotine –long term cigarette smoking is linked to
emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease. Physical and
psychological dependence can develop.
