Immunology Introduction

What is the immunity? Immunity: All the mechanisms used by the body as protection against environmental agents that are foreign to the body. The cells and molecules responsible for immunity constitute the immune system, and their collective and coordinated response to the introduction of foreign substances called immune response. Immunity may be innate or acquired

Innate immunity early line of defense against microbes. In place even before infection and are poised to respond rapidly to infections. And respond in essentially the same way to repeated infections The principal components of innate immunity are: 1- Physical and chemical barriers , such as epithelia and antimicrobial substances produced at epithelial surfaces. 2- cells: phagocytic cells and natural killer cells. 3- blood proteins 4- cytokines the mechanisms of innate immunity are specific for structures that are common to groups of related microbes ( pathogen associated molecular pattern (PAMP)

Adaptive immunity: Present only in vertebrates Immune responses that are stimulated by exposure to antigen. The main features of adaptive immunity are specificity ability to remembers and respond more vigorously to repeated exposure to the same microbes. It can distinguish between different microbes and molecules. The main components of adaptive immunity are cells called lymphocytes and their secreted products.
