define so is CREATIVE WRITING

8. THE ART OF CREATIVE WRITING
•Creative writing is any writing that is original,
artistic, and self-expressive.
•Its purpose is to entertainand share human
experiences, and it does so by expressing
feelings or thoughts that are borne out of the
imagination as you can see in poetry, fiction,
plays, and personal essays.

9. •Because it uses a lot of the imagination,
creative writing is also called imaginative
writing or literature, as opposed to technical
or academic writing, the main goal of which is
to present facts.

10. WHAT IS CREATIVE WRITING?
•Is any writing that is in contrast to analytic or
pragmatic forms of literature like professional,
journalistic, academic, medical, scientific,
business, or technical writing.

11. •Is a form of artistic expression that draws on
the imagination to convey thoughts, ideas,
and feelings through the use of narrative
craft, character development literary
techniques, and various traditions of poetry
and poetics.
WHAT IS CREATIVE WRITING?

12. EXAMPLES OF CREATIVE WRITING
•Fiction (maybe a short story, novel, novella, even
a joke) –mostly made-up stuff borne of the
imagination
•Poetry (also songs, riddles and proverbs) –takes
liberties with language and imagery
•Plays (including screenplays, teleplays, stage
plays, and radio plays) –require significant level
of creative and imaginative thinking

13. CHARACTERISTICS OF CREATIVE WRITING
1. Clarity
The writing does not confuse your audience.
This sounds so obvious, but you’d be surprised at the
number of writers who think they have to be clever or coy
or literary which simply leaves the reader in the dark.

It has a beginning, a middle and an ending.
The beginning draws readers in and the ending is
satisfying. This holds true for fiction, memoir, personal
essays, autobiographies, and stories for children.
A genius writer ignores this, however most do not.

15. 3. Emotion
The text is emotionally charged and the reader cares what
happens to the protagonist.
We either cry or laugh or are scared or feel something.

16. 4. Meaning and connection
Recognize that it is all about people or situations that the
reader can connect to.
Do we enter into a story with the author for
entertainment? a subject/ topic? or emotion that we too
are dealing with or want to learn about? or are we looking
for humour?
The writing connects to the rest of the world.

17. 5. Language
The author cares deeply about words and their power.
No overblown adjectives or adverbs (and only those
absolutely necessary for information.) No flabby clichés.
Does the author love language?
Is there evidence of how the words and sentences are
honed and rewritten?

19. Whatever your motivation for writing turns out
to be and whatever struggles and triumphs you
have in writing, look forward to the act of
creation, of writing creatively, because it will,
and it does, give you a great deal of meaning
and satisfaction in life.

Creative writing is an art. It is an art of self-
expression that allows you to process your
sensory experience and imagination so that
you can communicate your thoughts and
feelings about the human experience in a
manner that is enjoyable, engaging, and
enlightening.

21. Creative writing is also a discipline. It can be
learned, and with diligent practice, it can be
mastered. Just like any craft, there are helpful
techniques, and tricks of the trade that you can
use to get the best out of creative writing.
