Introduction to database and analysis software’s suitable for health research Presentation By : Nabin Parajul Roll no : 10 MPH 1 st semester, 2024 batch 30/07/2024 1

Introduction to database and analysis software’s. Application of software in public health. Overview on Epi info SPSS Ms excel R Stata Python Reference 30/07/2024 2 Contents

Database An organized collection of data, generally stored and accessed electronically from a computer system. Data can be easily accessed and manipulated by authorized users. Eg : Electricity service provider uses database to manage bills, client id and issues, social media like FB, Instagram etc Software A set of instructions, data, or programs used to operate computers and execute specific tasks. Enhances the capabilities of hardware, allowing users to perform a wide range of tasks. 30/07/2024 3 Introduction to database and analysis software’s.

Application software specifically designed for statistical analysis and data visualization. It assist to manage and manipulate large datasets. Provides tools for performing various statistical tests and procedures. It plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of public health functions. Eg : Ms excel, SPSS, Python, Epi info, Stata, etc. 30/07/2024 4 Statistical software

Systematic data collection, storage and management. Data analysis, identifying health trend in diseases surveillance. Health promotion and education. Collaborating health information for planning and policy formation. Conducting research. Training and capacity building. 30/07/2024 5 Application of software in public health.

30/07/2024 6 Epi info Epi Info™ a public domain software tool fo r public health practitioners and researchers.   Developed by centre for disease control (CDC) The software enables epidemiologists and other public health professionals to create questionnaire, customize the data entry process, and analyse data.

30/07/2024 7 Tools in Epi Info

Create Forms – Create a questionnaire using one or more forms to collect and view data. Enter Data – Enter data and view existing records. Analyse Data (Classic and Visual Dashboard) – Manage data, run statistical analyses, and generate lists, tables, graphs, and charts. Create Maps – Create maps from map server. 30/07/2024 8 Contd..

Strengths Cost effective as no licensing fee is required. Its tools are compatible in mobile devices so easy for field activities. Includes a wide range of statistical analysis tools for epidemiological research. Integrated Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping and spatial analysis. Developed for public health practitioners so easy for disease surveillance and outbreak investigation. 30/07/2024 9 Strengths and limitations

Limitations. It lacks some advanced statistical techniques found in other software. Working with large datasets affects in performance and analysis speed. It is primarily desktop based software therefore there might be security risk associated with data storage and management Although it was developed by CDC the user community is very small compare to other software’s. 30/07/2024 10 Contd..

30/07/2024 11 Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) IBM SPSS It is a software package used for the analysis of statistical data (data management, advanced analytics, multivariate analysis, business intelligence, and criminal investigation) It was developed by three students at the University of Stanford (Norman H. Nie, C. Hadlai (Tex) Hull and Dale H. Bent)

Strength SPSS offers wide range of statistical tools which are suitable for data analysis. SPSS provides tools for creating visual and graphical representations. Many complex statistical tests are available as built in features Timely update of necessary tools in different versions. 30/07/2024 21 Strength and Limitation of SPSS

Limitations SPSS can be expensive to buy for students. Usually training requires to explore all the features. It analyse whatever the command it receives although output has no meaning. It is designed primarily for quantitative data so not suitable for all types of data. 30/07/2024 22 Contd..

30/07/2024 23 Ms Excel It is a versatile spreadsheet software, using a grid of cells in rows and column to manipulate data. It is developed by Microsoft and be used in computes and mobiles with inbuild features. It is globally used to organize data and usually for financial analysis

Excel allows users to create and organize data in a tabular format with rows and columns. Excel provides a wide range of built-in functions (e.g., SUM, AVERAGE,) for mathematical operations. Excel offers various chart types (bar, line, pie, etc.) for data visualization. Excel files can be shared, collaborated on, and tracked by multiple users. 30/07/2024 24 Features of Ms Excel

30/07/2024 26 R ‘R’ software is widely used  free statistical software  that provides statistical and graphical techniques including linear and non-linear modeling It is developed by R core team (Ross ihaka and Robert Gentlemen)

R software is open source and its free. Toolboxes essentially plugins are available for great range of applications. Knowledge of coding is required here A large, coherent, integrated collection of intermediate tools for data analysis, Graphical facilities for data analysis and display either on-screen or on hardcopy R is used for quantitative data analysis 30/07/2024 27 Features

30/07/2024 28 Stata Stata is also a widely used software that enables to analyze , manage, store and produce graphical visualization of data. Stata was initially developed by Computing Resource Center in California and the first version was released in 1985

Stata provides robust tools for statistical analysis. Researchers and analysts worldwide trust it for its accuracy and efficiency. Stata allows to store, organize, and manipulate data for large or small datasets. It is generally used by researchers in the field of economics, social sciences and biomedicine to examine the data patterns. Stata is used for quantitative data analysis 30/07/2024 29 Features of Stata

30/07/2024 30 Python Python  is a fully functional, open, interpreted programming language It was developed by python software foundation in 1991

Python is a complete, integrated statistical package that provides everything for data analysis from data management to basic and advanced analysis. Python makes it easy to conduct data cleaning and management, distinctly styled graphs, descriptive analysis and advanced analysis. There is no user Fees to use this software. 30/07/2024 31 Features
