INTRODUCTIONTO IMMUNE SYSTEM
PRESENTED BY,
HIRUNI SANDUNIKA,
SINDH BIOTECHNOLOGIST
ASSOCIATION (SBA)
What is immunity?
•Resistance to diseases specially for infectious
diseases.
What is immune system?
•Cells, tissues and molecules that mediate immunity.
What is Immunology ?
Itisthestudyoftheimmunesystem,including
itsresponsestomicrobialpathogensand
damagedtissuesanditsroleindisease.
Role of immune system
1. Defense against infections
2. Defense against tumors
3. Recognizes and responds to tissue grafts
and newly introduced proteins
Antigen
Foreign substance capable of triggering an immune
response in an organism.
Allergy
A misguided reaction by the immune system to
harmless foreign substances.
Defence system in our body
Innate immunity
•Early Defence
•Natural or naïve immunity
•Enhance the adaptive immunity responses
Adaptive immunity
•Also called acquired immunity.
•Occurs after expose to an antigen.
•Two types as humoral immunity and cell
mediated immunity.
Humoral immunity
•Mediated by antibodies produced by B cells.
•Defence against extracellular microbes.
Cell mediated immunity
•Mediated by T lymphocytes.
•Defence against intracellular microbes.
•Activated helper T cells and cytotoxic T cells.
Active and passive immunity
•Active immunity is the acquirement of immune
responses through vaccines.
•Passive immunity is the transfer of antibodies
or lymphocytes from an actively immunized
individual. (Temporary)
Cells of the immune system
Tissues of immune system
•Generative lymphoid organs
•Bone marrow, thymus
•Peripheral lymphoid organs
•Lymph nodes, spleen
