What is Interpersonal Communication? Interpersonal communication is defined as a process by which people create and manage their relationships and exercise mutual responsibility in creating meaning.
Interpersonal communication is not just about what is actually said ( V erbal Communication-the language used), but how it is said and the non-verbal messages sent through tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures and body language.
The functions of Interpersonal Communication. Through Interpersonal communication we attempt to meet our social and psychological needs. Through Interpersonal communication we develop a sense of self. Through interpersonal communication we fulfil social obligations. Through Interpersonal communication we acquire informations. Through Interpersonal communication we influence and are influenced by others.

The Interpersonal communication as Process
Communication Context that may affect. Physical Context: The physical environment where the communication is taking place. Social Context: The relationship between the participant. Historical Context: If the communication is linked with previous communication episodes between the participants. Psychological Context: Moods and feelings of the participants. Cultural Context: Values, beliefs, attitudes, meanings , social hierarchies, religion etc.
The Interpersonal communication Principles Communication has a purpose. Communication is a continuous Communication is relational Communication pattern is either acquired or learned.
The Ethics of Interpersonal communication Ethical Communicators are truthful and honest. Ethical Communicators behave fairly. Ethical Communicators demonstrate respect for the ideas, opinions and feelings of others. Ethical Communicators are responsible.
Class Activity: Share with your class mate any one incident when you were fail to communicate your message to the other participant. (any scenario, family, friends, classmate, colleagues, etc ) Discuss what you think were the factors that hindered or failed your message to be communicated?
