Computer System

What is Computer. Computer is an electronic device which convert data into information. Computer takes raw data as input and process it into useable data. Computer is a programmable machine.

Information processing Cycle Input memory CU ALU Output

Components of Computer Memory Mass Storage Input device Output device Central P rocessing Unit (CPU)

1 Memory Enable a computer to store data, program on temporary basis. Types: RAM Random Access Memory ROM Read O nly Memory 1. RAM: It is an electronic scratch pad inside the computer. RAM is made up of set of chips mounted on a small circuit board. It has a remarkable impact on the speed and power of computer.

2. ROM It is non volatile memory . Permanently stores its data even when the computer is shut off. Its holds the contents that the computer need to operate.

2. Mass Storage It allows a computer to permanently retail a large amount of data. It include solid state drives SSD, tape drives, USB.

Storage Devices Magnetic storage devices Optical Storage devices CD-ROM Video card Sound card

1 Magnetic storage devices Magnetic storage device are use the same medium.(the material on which the data is stored) The surface of storage devices are coated with magnetically sensitive material such as iron oxide that react to magnetic field.

Optical storage device The most popular alternative of magnetic storage system are OSD. It include CD or DVD ROM They store data on reflective surface so it can read by a beam of laser light. Laser uses a concentrated narrow beam of light focused and directed with lenses prisms and mirror.

Video card Video card Intermediary device between CPU and the monitor. It contain the video dedicated memory and other circuit necessary to send information to the monitor for display on the screen

Sound card The most complicated part of computers sound system. It is a circuit board that can converts sound from analog to digital form. The sound card has both input and output function.

Central processing Unit CPU it is the heart of computer This is the component who actually execute information.

Input & Output Devices Input Devices: These are the devices through which can insert data and instruction in computer. Key board Mouse Scanner Joy Sticks Digital Camera Touch screen

Output Devices: These are the devices who let you see the result or output. Display screen Speaker Printer

Types Of Computer Personal Computer Mainframe Computer Mini Computer Super Computer

Personal Computer PC The Most common type It is design to sit on a desk or table.

Types of PC Desktop computers Workstations Notebook computers Tablet computers Handheld computers Smart phones

Mainframe Large sized computers Huge storage capacity and huge processing power Handle thousands of users Mainly used for transaction processing.

Mini Computer Small in size compared to other computers of the day Capabilities are some where in between those of main frames and PCs Often called midrange computers.

Super Computer The most powerful computers made Can process huge amount of data per second Some super computers can house thousands of Processors Ideal for handling large and highly complex problems that require extreme calculating power.
