Internet of
Things – Getting
Started

Goal of Internet of Things
•Internet of Things is a new revolution of the
Internet.
•The goal of the Internet of Things
“ is to enable things to be connected anytime,
anyplace, with anything and anyone ideally
using any path/network and any service”.

The Future Potential of IOT
Internet of Things will enable us to create
Smart Cities (and regions),
Smart Car and mobility,
Smart Home and assisted living,
Smart Industries,
Public safety,
Energy & environmental protection,
Agriculture and Tourism

IoT Impact on Other Technologies
The evolution of Internet of Things will also depend upon the
evolution of other Technologies like
Cloud computing,
Future Internet,
Big Data,
Robotics

What is Internet of things?- Different Definitions
Definition: 1
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects.
Definition: 2
"Things“ embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network
connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data.
Definition : 3
The “Internet of Things” allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely
across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct
integration between the physical world and computer-based systems.

What is Internet of things?- Different Definitions
Definition: 4
Invisible, everywhere computing.
Definition: 5
Internet of Things = mobile computing + intelligent environment.
Definition: 6
The Internet of Things is not a single technology, it’s a concept in which most
new things are connected and enabled such as
Street lights being networked.
Things like embedded sensors,
Image recognition functionality,
Near field communication are integrated into situational decision support,
Asset management and new services.
These bring many business opportunities and add to the complexity of IT.

What is Internet of things?- Different Definitions
Definition: 7
Direct integration between the physical world and computer-based systems which
also
Improves efficiency,
Accuracy and
Results in economic benefit.
Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is
able to interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure.
Definition: 8
“We are heading into a new era of ubiquity, where the users of the Internet will be
counted in billions, and where humans may become the minority as generators
and receivers of data traffic.
Changes brought about by the Internet will be dwarfed by those prompted by the
networking of everyday objects”

What is Internet of things?- Different Definitions
Definition: 9
Internet of Things will connect world's objects in both a sensory and intelligent
manner through combining technological developments in
Item identification ( "tagging things")
Sensors and wireless sensor network ("feeling things")
Embedded systems ("thinking things")
Nanotechnology ("shrinking things")
Definition: 10
The Internet of things, also known as the Internet of objects, refers to the
networked interconnection of everyday objects. It is described as a self
configuring wireless network of sensors whose purpose would be to interconnect
all things.

What is Internet of things?- Different Definitions
Definition: 11
IoT is a network of interconnected computers to a network of interconnected
objects, from books to cars, from electrical appliances to food, and thus create
an ‘Internet of things’.
These objects will sometimes have their own Internet Protocol addresses, be
embedded in complex systems and use sensors to obtain information from their
environment and/or use actuators to interact with it.
Definition: 12
“Internet of Things” to refer to the general idea of things, especially everyday
objects, that are readable, recognizable, locatable, addressable, and/or
controllable via the Internet.

What are things?
 Things that are computers including smart phones equipped with
communication interfaces.
 Things that are not computers, but which are associated with computers
equipped with communication interfaces
 "Things," in the IoT sense, can also refer to a wide variety of devices such
as
heart monitoring implants,
biochip transponders on farm animals,
electric clams in coastal waters,
automobiles with built-in sensors,
field operation devices that assist firefighters in search and rescue
operations.
These devices collect useful data with the help of various existing
technologies and then autonomously flow the data between other
devices.
Current market examples include smart thermostat systems and
washer/dryers that use Wi-Fi for remote monitoring.

Attributes of things
“Things” would be competing with other “things” on resources, services and
subject to selective pressures.
“Things” can create, manage and destroy other “things”.
“Things” can use services that act as interfaces to “things”.
“Things” respect the privacy, security and safety of other “things” or people
with which they interact.
“Things” use protocols to communicate with each other and the
infrastructure.
“Things” can negotiate, understand and adapt to their environment.
“Things” can extract patterns from the environment or to learn from other
“things”.
“Things” are environmentally safe.
“Things” can take decisions through their reasoning capabilities.

IoT Predictions for 2022
Experts estimate that the IoT will consist of almost 50 billion objects by 2022.
