Talc Processing Hamedgul Hamidi Supervisor : Dr Sadia

Outlines Introduction to Soap Stone Applications and Uses Chemical and Physical Properties Soap Stone and its Grades Areas in Pakistan Containing ores Ores Processing and Beneficiations

Introduction … Soapstone / Talc Stone   Chemical Compositions Soapstone is the common name for the mineral steatite. Steatite is at least 50% talc combined with other minerals, mostly magnetite. While when the Talc is pure its composition is 31.88 % of MgO , 63.33% of SiO 2 and 4.75 % of H 2 O World Reserve of Talc Stone Country Metric Tons Country Metric Tons Country Metric Tons China 23,00,000 Korea 14,000 France 4,20,00 USA 1,40,000 India 4,000 etc Brazile 5,50,000 Finland 4,40,00 Japan 1,00,000 Pakistan 600

Talc Application and Uses Daily Life Uses Beauty and Makeup Kits Toilet Soap manufacturing Cosmetic industries in baby talc powder Sinks masonry heaters flooring Sculpture kitchen countertops wall tile  Detergent manufacturing Industrial Uses   Dal mills (Pulses polishing) Textile Printing Ink Rubber industry Electric Cables Filler raw material in many chemical industries.  lubricating dusting powder

Hazard & Safety Issues Talc waste is not reactive, flammable or biodegradable.

Environment During processing its dust should be controlled . As Talc is mostly linked with pulmonary diseases like Lung Cancer, Skin Cancer and also Ovarian Cancer. Talc is sometimes coupled with Asbestos Minerals .Talc Products containing asbestos fibers are fatal to human body.

Other Health Problems Other health issues are: Inhalation : Inhalation of large amounts of this fine dust may lead to pulmonary edema . May cause irritation to the upper respiratory tract. Tickling cough is a common symptom. Ingestion: Large doses may cause gastric irritation, nausea, and diarrhea . Skin Contact: May cause irritation . Eye Contact: May cause redness or irritation of eyes . Chronic Exposure: Prolonged inhalation of dust is associated with respiratory effects. Long term excessive exposures to talc may cause Talcosis , a pulmonary fibrosis which may in turn lead to severe and permanent damage to the lung. Crystalline Silica: Chronic inhalation of dust can produce Silicosis , a disease of the lungs. Chronic inhalation of crystalline silica is a lung cancer hazard .
