“Wings of Fire: The Dragonet Prophecy:
A Graphic Novel” Unofficial Japanese Translation Project
This project involved the unofficial translation of Wings of Fire: The Dragonet Prophecy:
A Graphic Novel from English into Japanese, which is a graphic novel adaptation of
the first entry in the Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland. The graphic novel follows
the journey of five young dragonets prophesied to end a long-standing war and bring
peace to the land of Pyrrhia.
Challenges included deciding whether to pursue a domestication or foreignization
approach for translating character names and terminology. Another challenge was
ensuring that character dialogue flowed naturally and suited the various character
types represented in the graphic novel. When translating character dialogue from
English into Japanese, navigating the intricacies of yakuwarigo, or role speech,
emerged as a significant challenge. Yakuwarigo refers to the linguistic nuances
associated with specific archetypes found exclusively in the Japanese language.
Unlike direct translations, yakuwarigo requires creative decisions to convey each
archetype effectively. As a result, careful consideration was taken to adapt and
choose appropriate expressions to faithfully capture the essence of each archetype
in Japanese.
To inform the translation process, official translations of the series, especially the
French translation, were referenced to gain insights into how character names and
terminology were handled. These comparative analyses provided invaluable
guidance in making informed decisions while maintaining consistency with existing
translations of the franchise.

"A NightWing Guide to the Dragons of Pyrrhia”
Unofficial Japanese Translation Project
This project involved the unofficial translation of the guide to the dragon tribes
depicted in the Wings of Fire novels from English into Japanese. The guide provides
details about the various dragon tribes, including their unique characteristics, abilities,
and alliances in the SandWing War of Succession.
Challenges arose in deciding whether to pursue a domestication or foreignization
approach for translating tribe names and the names of the dragon queens, and
ensuring natural phrasing in order to maintain readability while accurately conveying
the rich lore of the dragon world.

On their journey to defeat Sin, they meet an evil

“New Final Fantasy X Kabuki Story Summary”
Unofficial English Subtitling Project
This project involved the creation of unofficial English subtitles for one of the story
explanation videos for Kinoshita Group presents New Final Fantasy X Kabuki, an
adaptation of Final Fantasy X presented in kabuki theater style.
One of the primary challenges encountered during this project was accurately
matching English terminology with the Japanese terminology used in the Final Fantasy
franchise. Ensuring consistency in terminology across the subtitles was crucial to
maintaining coherence for fans of the series. Additionally, conveying Japanese
cultural terms posed another significant challenge, as it required careful consideration
to preserve the cultural context and meaning while making the content accessible to
non-Japanese audiences.
Furthermore, maintaining synchronization between the subtitles and the on-screen
actions was essential to provide a seamless viewing experience. This involved precise
timing and editing to ensure that the subtitles appeared at the appropriate moments
and remained synchronized with the dialogue and visuals. Additionally, given the
constraints of character limits for subtitles, condensing dialogue without sacrificing
clarity or meaning was a continuous challenge throughout the project.
