Name and biography Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) was a Spanish painter, born in Valencia, Spain. Sorolla was the oldest of four children, and his family has little money during his childhood. However, he received a scholarship to study when he was 15 years old. He was particularly interested in the representation of human figures and the everyday lives of people, as well as landscapes and seascapes. Throughout his career, Sorolla received numerous awards and honors, including the Grand Prix at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1900 and the Gold Medal at the National Exhibition in Madrid in 1901.
