JOB DESCRIPTION

DIRECTOR OF NURSING SERVICES: Duties Nursing adviser being the head of the nursing services in the country is responsible for advising the Government of India on all matter concerning nursing service, nursing education and specialization in nursing .

She/he guides, supervises and co-ordinates nursing services and nursing education in state. She/he plans total nursing manpower of the country in the area of nursing service, nursing education and continuing education, etc. in co-operation and co-ordination with state government and voluntary agencies .

Responsible for developing the national and international project concerning in India. She is programme officer for nursing section in the office of the D.G.H.S. which involve component of all the national health programme . Maintains liaison with all profession bodies concerned with improving the standards of nursing services and nursing education in the country.

DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF NURSING SERVICE Training of various categories of nursing personnel in family planning on all India basis. Periodical assessment of the need of nursing personnel working in family planning in term of quantitative and qualitative. Advising state Government on ways and means of meeting the situation. Advising the Government of India in term of policy making as regards of nursing training. Any other responsibilities assigned.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF NURSING : Duties and responsibilities are: She/he responsible to see that the nursing services in the state run smoothly regarding: Leave. Transfer of nursing personnel. Promotion and posting. Appointments with consultation with superintendent of nursing services of another section. Review of confidential reports. Correspondence with government and non0government institutions .

Educational programmes . Proposals to government. Inspections. Representation nursing interest on health committees. Participating in health care planning. Deputing for B.Sc.nursing , M.Sc. nursing in state or out of state and other training higher learning programme , two years or less to nursing personnel.

Sanction of pre-audit bills. Granting permission for workshop/and special seminar. No objection certificates for passport. Administrative works pertaining to nursing personnel.

PUBLIC HEALTH/ COMMUNITY NURSING ORGANIZATION (AT COMMUNITY LEVEL) DISTRICT NURSING OFFICER The Job District Nursing Officers get a chance to foster a close and trusting relationship with our individual clients and their family members as they strive to stay healthy and independent. As a district nursing officer you will be challenged to identify creative solutions for situations involving, for example, chronic pain, psychiatric illness, substance abuse and rehabilitation. You must remain current in all nursing practices, clinical therapies and community resources in order to provide the best possible service to all.

The Qualifications University degree in nursing. Experience in community nursing is highly desirable. Strong problem-solving skills. Expertise in specialties such as mental health and geriatrics are important assets.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING OFFICER/SUPERVISOR Duties and responsibility Public health nursing supervisor is directly responsible to district public health nurse, medical officer for the provision, supervision and improvement of community health care within the assigned area. She carries out preventive, promotive , curative and rehabilitative care. Assists in determining the philosophies and objectives of the community health programme . Gives leaderships in planning total health care to all individuals, families and community and in all fields that she is appointed .

Assists in preparation of budget for the community health department. Major responsibility in guidance and supervision of PHN/LHV/ANM/ students who are under her. Organizes educational programme for the community member including school children, mothers and other interested group in her area. Ensures that the worker under her maintain proper records and achieve their regard of work.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE: Duties and responsibilities are: To Helps in organization of maternal and child health programme . To promote health and nutrition education activities through the lady health visitors, auxiliary nurse midwives’. To help in developing school health programme in the district.

To ensure regular supply of equipments for MCH work. To help the statistical officer in the district family welfare bureau in compiling the periodical progress report of MCH activities. To review the periodical progress report on MCH/FP work done by the LHVs/ANMs, female multipurpose workers, etc .and put up to the district medical officer/district family welfare officer the points requiring attention and further action. To provide for continuing education of the female MCH/FP /functionaries in the district through short in-service training sources.

Provides health care to all individual, families and community in any field that she is appointed. Trains, supervises and guides health workers in the delivery of health care services to the community. Plans health and family welfare programmes among with health worker. Carries out supervisory health visits in the area covered by the health worker. Coordinate the work of the male and female health worker and the personnel. Assists in conducting medical examination of the school children.

Lady health visitors are directly responsible for the preventive, promotive , curative and rehabilitative health care carried out in the health centers, maternity homes, hospital and in the community. Each health visitor is responsible for the care of 40,000 population in the community. She is the next responsible to the medical officer incharge of the center. She independently runs the family planning and maternity centers. LHV:

ANMs: Duties and responsibilities: Registration: She will register Pregnant women from three month onwards. Married women in the reproductive period. Children through systematic home visits at a clinic. Maintain maternity records, register of antenatal cases, eligible couple register, children register up to date. Categorize the mother according to the age and number of children.

Care at home: She will provide care to the pregnant women. Gives advice on nutrition to expectant and nursing mothers. Distribute iron and folic acid tablets to the pregnant mothers. Immunize mother with tetanus toxoid . Refer cases of abnormal pregnancy. Spared the message of family planning to the couples.etc.

Care at the clinic: Arrange and help M.O.in conducting MCH and FP clinics at the sub-center. Conduct urine examination and estimate Hb %. Educate mother individually and in group in better family health including MCH and family planning, nutrition, immunization, hygiene and minor ailments.

HOSPITAL AND INSTITUTIONAL LEVEL: NURSING SUPERINTENDENT Nursing superintended is responsible to the medical superintendent, in a hospital having 400 or above bed strength. She is accountable for the safe and effective running of the various nursing departments in the hospital. She is assisted in carrying out her duties, by the deputy nursing superintendent /assistant nursing superintendent, ward supervisor and clerical, linen room and domestic staff.

Duties and responsibilities are: Nursing services: Participate in the formulation of the philosophy of the hospital in general and those specific to the nursing service. Determine goals, aims, objectives and policies of the nursing services. Implements hospital policies and rules through various nursing units. Decides and recommends personnel and material requirement for running various nursing services department of the hospitals. Interview and recruits nursing staff .

Assist in student’s selection and recruitment of other auxiliary staff whose duties are related to nursing. Ensure the safe and efficient care rendered in the various nursing departments of the hospital. Makes regular visits in the hospital and wards. Takes hospital rounds with the medical superintendent.

Looks after the welfare of the patients. Gives counseling and guidance to the subordinate staff. Maintains discipline among nurses and other auxiliary staff. Participates in the hospitals and inter hospitals meetings. Investigates complaints and takes necessary steps. Plans staff developments programme . Arranges student’s clinical experience and council examination. Initiates and participates in the research work.

General and official duties: Attends to general correspondents. Maintains necessary records concerning to staff, students, and confidential reports and nursing council and nurses registration council. Participates in professional and community activities. Maintain cordial relations with public and voluntary worker.

DEPUTY NURSING SUPERINTENDENT : Responsible to the nursing superintendent and assists her/him in the nursing service administration of the hospital. She/ he is independently in charge of nursing service department of a less than 400 bedded hospital.

Nursing service: Officiates in the absence of nursing superintendent. Participates in the formulation of nursing services, philosophies, objectives and policies. Assists in the recruitment of nursing staff and student’s selection. Makes master duties roster of the nursing staff. Helps in allocation nursing personnel to various nursing service departments .

Assists in planning and organizing the new units in hospital, e.g. I.C.U., C.S.D. etc. Maintains confidential reports and records of the nursing staff. Takes regular hospitals rounds. Supervises care given in various departments.

Serves on several hospital committees, e.g. purchase committee, class IV employee committee. Assists in supervision of Nurses’ home, nurses’ hostel. Receives night reports from night supervisors. Conduct regular physical verification of hospital stocks. Attends to emergency calls in rotation concerning hospital or hostel problems.

Educational function: Assists in planning and implementing staff development programme . Ensures clinical experience facilities for students nurses in various clinical areas of the hospitals. Guides and counsels nursing staff. Arranges orientation programme for new nursing staff. Maintains discipline among nursing personnel. Organizes experience programme for post-graduate students from different hospital.

General duties: Escorts special visitors, nursing superintendent, medical superintendent for hospital rounds. Arranges and participates in professional and social function of the staff and students. Maintains good public relation. Carries out the other duties assigned to her by the nursing superintendent.

ASSISTANT NURSING SUPERINTENDENT: She /he is responsible for developing and supervising nursing services of a department or a floor consisting of two or more wards or units managed by the ward supervisors. Patient care and ward management: Organizes and plans nursing care activities of the department of floor according to hospital policies and service need. Plans staffing patterns and other necessary requirements of her /his department .

Complies and submits nursing statistics to the concerned authorities. Conduct and attend to departmental and interdepartmental meeting /conference from time to time. Makes regular rounds of her/his departments. Sees to the safety and general cleanliness of the department.

Looks into general comforts of the patients and his/her relatives. Receives reports from the night superintendent of her / his departments. Makes rotation plans of nursing staff under her/his junction. Reinforce the principles of good ward management of ward. Supervises the proper use and care of the equipment and supplies in the department. Act as a public officer relation in the unit and deals with problems faced by the ward supervisor.

Educational function: Arranges classes and clinical teaching of nursing students in the department, related to the specialty experience. Does counseling guidance to staff and students. Arranges and develops staff development program of her/his departments. Assists in planning for and participation in the training of auxiliary personnel. Writes the confidential reports of her/his ward/units supervisor.

General duties: Escorts special visitors, nursing superintendent, medical superintendent for hospital rounds. Arranges and participates in professional and social function of the staff and students. NURSING SISTER/WARD SISTER/SUPERVISOR Nursing supervisor is accountable for the nursing care management of a ward or a unit assigned to her/him. She is responsible to the nursing superintendent/assistant nursing superintendent for her ward management.

Direct patient care: Ensures proper admission, discharge of her patients. Plans nursing care makes patient’s assignment as per their nursing needs. Assists in the direct care of the patient as and when required. She/he sees that total health need for her /his patient’s are met. Sees that proper observation records of the patients are made and necessary information imparted to the concerned authority. Makes rounds with doctors. Implements doctors’ instruction concerning patient’s treatment. Assists patient and her relatives to adjust in the hospital and its routines. Co ordinates patient care with other department.

Supervision and administration: Ensures safe and clean environment for the ward /unit/special departments. Makes duties and work assignments. Does regular inventory checking of her/his wards/units. Assist in, making ward requirements. Establishes and reinforces standards prescribed in the procedures and manuals of hospitals and policies that are in force .

Acts as a liaison officer between ward staff and hospital administration. Maintains good public relations in her/his ward/units. Ensure that wards statistics are regularly submitted. Maintain discipline among the personnel working in the particular ward/units, e.g. staff nurses, students and domestic staff. Deals appropriately with any adverse situation that occurs in the ward/unit and report to the concerned authorities.

Reports any medico legal cases in the ward/units. Ensure that students get desired learning experience in the wards/units. Educational function: Organizes orientation programme for new staff nurses. Give teaching to the patient.

Conduct wards conference and meeting. Evaluates the students’ performance and submit reports to the school authority. Helps in medical and nursing research. Encourages staff development programme .

STAFF NURSE: General pre-university course/10+2 or equivalent exam. Professional: 3 years general nursing/9 month/6 months’ midwifery/psychiatric nursing diploma/certificate, recognized by Indian nursing council. Or Basic B.Sc. nursing from recognized university according to Indian nursing council norms. Registration: registration by Karnataka nursing council /Indian nursing council/respective state nursing council.

Job description: Staff nurse is first level professional nurse who provides direct patient care to one patient or group of patients assigned to her him during duty shift and assist in management of wards/units /special departments. She / he is directly responsible to senior staff nurse or ward in charge nurse/nursing superintendent Gr.II .

Duties and responsibilities Direct patient care. Ward unit management Operation theater management. Management of labour room. Management of post operative /ICU/burn unit. Psychiatric units. Educational function.

Direct patient care: Carry out the procedure of admission and discharge of the patient. Makes bed of serous patients and help or guides students or group d employee. Maintain personal hygiene and comfort of the patients. Attends all needs of the patients. Implement and maintains ward policies and routine. Coordinate patients care with other team members. Take rounds with the doctors when called to list new orders and see that they are carried out. Perform various technical task related to nursing care.

Ward /unit management: Helps the ward in charge to carry out her/his work of act as ward in charge during her absence. Maintain general cleanliness of the ward. Supervises the duties of group d employee. Writs the duties registers and supervises the distribution of diet and report if any, necessary .

Maintain scheduled poisonous drug registers. Supervises nursing care and other tasks carried out by the students. Maintain duty room tray and sterilizes instruments and see that procedural tray are in readiness. Take over from duty nurse of the previous, new and serious patients, instruments, supplies, drugs etc. Maintain all records pertaining toward/unit

Operation theater management: Maintain aseptic environment of the operation theater. Autoclaving of articles, instruments, gloves, linen etc. Receives patients from wad intact for the surgery. Prepare anesthetic trolley and trolley for surgery .

Assist the surgeon and anesthetic in every steps, skillfully while performing various types of surgery. Indenting and procuring surgical instruments, drugs, suturing materials etc. require to Operation Theater. Maintains records and reports pertaining to the operation theater.

Management of labour room Preparation of expectant mother for aseptic safe delivery. Conduct normal delivery and reports. Attends and assist the doctors in all obstetrical emergencies. Attained and assists in difficult and abnormal deliveries. Takes care of the new born and premature babies. Maintains records and reports pertaining to the labour rooms. Indent and procure necessary drugs, supplies, linen etc. to labour room.

Management of postoperative/ICU/burn units Indent and procurement of all the necessary equipments, drugs, which are required for the units. Operates ECG, EEG, cardiac resuscitation etc. or other sophisticated high-tech machines whenever needed or assist the doctors in operating such machines.

Psychiatric unit Assist the doctors in admission and discharge of the patient. Prepare patient for ECT and other procedure, and therapies. Assist in management of aggressive, suicidal as other symptoms of the patients. Maintain records and reports of the units.

Educational function Helps in orientation of the new staff and students. Teaches and guides the domestic staff for handling bedpans, urinals, etc. Carries out health teaching for individual and group of patients. Extends cooperation and participates in clinical teaching .

Provides for and demonstrates methods and procedure wherever needed. Participates in in-service education program. Plan and implements formal and informal health education programme and teaching programme . Assists and extends co-operation in medical and nursing research programme .

COLLEGE OF NURSING: PRINCIPAL, COLLEGE OF NURSING: Principal , the administrative head of the college of nursing will be responsible directly responsible to the directorate of medical education and directorate of health and family welfare services. As the head of the college she/he will be responsible for the smooth implementation of the INC syllabus and college administration.

Duties and responsibilities are : Administration : Planning. Develops philosophy and objectives for educational programme . Identifies the present needs related to educational programme . Investigates and secure resources. Formulates the plan of action. Selects and organizes learning experiences.

Organizing: Determines the number of position and scope and responsibilities of each faculty and staff. Analyses the job to be done in term of needs of educational programme . Prepares the job description, indicate line of authority, responsibility in the relationship and channels of communication by means of organizational charts and other methods. Maintains a plan of work load among staff members.

Directing: Directs activities of staff working under. Provides adequate orientation of staff members. Guides and encourages staff members in their job activities. Consistently makes administrative decision based on established policies. Promotes staff participation in research.

Co- ordinating : Co-ordinates activities relating to the programme such as regular meeting, time schedule, maintaining effective communication etc. Initiates way of co-operation. Interprets nursing education to other related disciplines and to the public.

Controlling: Provides for continuous follow up and revision of education programme . Maintains recognition of the education programme by accrediting bodies, university, INC etc. Maintains a comprehensive system of records. Prepares periodic reports.

Instruction: Plans for participating in the educational programmes for further staff development. Recognizes the need for continuing education for self and staff and provides stimulation of opportunities for such development. Participates as a teacher in the educational programme .

Guiding: Provides for systematic guidance programme for staff members and students. Encourages studies, research and writing for publication. Provides and maintains a programme for recruitment, selection and promotion of students.

PROFESSOR, COLLEGE OF NURSING: The professor is overall incharge of the department and there by responsible for administration, teaching activity and guidance of that particular department.

Duties and responsibilities are: Administration . Instruction. Helping the learner to acquire desirable attitudes, knowledge and skill. Evaluating learner’s progress. Recording and reporting. Investigating ways of improving teaching. Guidance. Counseling. Assisting in selection and promotion of learners. Research.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, COLLEGE OF NURSING The assistant professor usually works under professor and /HOD of the particular department of specialty and assist him / her in administration, teaching and guidance and counseling and research activity.

Duties and responsibilities: Administration : Participates in determination of the education purpose and policies. Utilizes opportunities through group action to initiate improvement of the educational programme . Directs the activities of the staff working in the department.

Instruction: Identifies needs of the learner. Plans within the educational units. Develop plan for learning experience. Participate in the continuing development and evaluation of the curriculum. Helping the learner to acquire desirable attitudes, knowledge and skill .

Evaluating learner’s progress. Recording and reporting. Investigating ways of improving teaching. Guidance. Counseling. Assisting in selection and promotion of learners. Research.

LECTURER, COLLEGE OF NURSING: Duties and responsibilities are: He/she works under the direction of the departmental head and assists him in administration, instruction and guidance activity.

Instruction: Identifies the needs of the learners. Selects and organizes learning experiences which are in accordance with these activities. Increases knowledge and skill in own curriculum area. Prepare clear and concise reports. Devices teaching methods appropriate to objectives and contents.

Guidance and counseling: Gives guidance within own field of competency. Helps the learner to grow in self understanding.

Research: Assist in initiating and participating in studies for the improvement of the education programme . Makes data available concerning learner and concerning methods of learning and evaluation. Continue to develop competence in problem-solving process. Utilizes the finding of research

NURSING TUTOR/CLINICAL INSTRUCTORS Roles and responsibility: Academic function: Responsible for the planning and implementation of the programme . Overall supervision of the teaching programme in subjects in hospital/community health setting. Teaching subject in the curriculum. Maintains classroom equipments, supplies and teaching aids. Conducts test and evaluation of student’s assignments and performance. Helping the students with extracurricular activities.

Administration and evaluation: Assisting in the administration of the school of nursing. Supervision of the student’s health, welfare and security. Assisting in the selection of students and administration. Assisting in examination and test. Supervision of living condition of the students in the hostel. Assisting the teaching of other category of the personnel in the hospital and community. Assisting in maintaining school record. Planning and implementation and evaluation of the specification of the course.

  SCHOOL OF NURSING: PRINCIPAL SCHOOL OF NURSING: Duties and responsibilities: Principal, the administrative head of the general nursing school will be responsible to the medical superintendent or district surgeon of the hospital. Once the financial control of school handed over to the principal. he/she shall be directly responsible to the directorate of medical education and directorate of health and family welfare services. As the head of the school she/he will be responsible for the smooth implementation of the INC syllabus and school administration .

Some of the duties and responsibilities are divided in three parts- Administrative Educational. Miscellaneous.

Note- the principal general nursing school of nursing is an overall in charge of the school, however, for smooth running of the institution, it is necessary for him/her to delegate the responsibility of the hostel, library, laboratories, nursing sciences, nutrition community health, to the senior most person in the department or the warden or tutor in charge of that subject/area etc.

Senior tutor: Responsible for planning and implementation of teaching programme . Teaching subjects in the curriculum. Overall supervision of the clinical teaching programme / Assisting in the administration of school of nursing. Assisting in examination, tests. Supervision of living condition of the students in the hostel. Guiding students in extra curricular activities. Assisting the principal in the general administration of the nursing school. Planning, implementation of specific course.

Tutor: Teaching nursing subjects. Supervision of student nurses in clinical field. Arrangements for external lecture. Participation in clinical teaching. Guidance and counseling of students. Evaluation of students’ assignments. Any other duties assigned.

Clinical instructor: Responsible for the planning and implementation of the programme . Overall supervision of the teaching programme in subjects in hospital/community health setting. Assisting the teaching of other category of the personnel in the hospital and community. Assisting in maintaining school record. Planning and implementation and evaluation of the specification of the course.
