Joints construction
Definition Joinery part of woodworking that involves joining together pieces of wood or lumber, to produce more complex items . Some wood joints employ fasteners, bindings, or adhesives , while others use only wood elements . The characteristics of wooden joints - strength , flexibility, toughness, appearance, etc.
What is an important Rule in Joinery? When two or more boards are joined together they must be made to look like one solid piece, with the joint concealed, or if it cannot be concealed, it must be shown as if it is purposely done.
Origin of Wood Joints Wood Cuts Combination Joint in itself
MITER JOINT Is a joint made by cutting each of two parts to be joined, across the main surface, usually at a 45° angle, to form a corner, usually a 90° angle.

RABBET JOINT Refers to one member of the joint has a rabbet cut that resemble capital letter “L”

DADO JOINT R efers to one member of the joint has a dado cut that resemble capital letter “U” whose set up is across the grain of the wood.

GROOVE JOINT Refers to one member of the joint has a groove cut that resemble capital letter “U” whose set up is along the grain of the wood.

2. COMBINATION COMBINING TWO DIFFERENT WOOD JOINTS SIMPLE OR COMPLEX EXAMPLE: 1. SLIP- MITER JOINT 2. END LAP MITER JOINT 3. DADO RABBET JOINT
SLIP-MITER JOINT M eans that one member has a miter and open slot and the other member has a miter and tongue.

3. JOINT IN ITSELF SINGLE JOINT INTO TYPES OR KINDS Example: Butt Joint Scarf Joint Lap Joint Finger Joint Mortise And Tenon Joint
BUTT JOINT A butt joint is a technique in which two pieces of material are joined by simply placing their ends together without any special shaping . The name 'butt joint' comes from the way the material is joined together
APPLICATION: PROJECT
SCARF JOINT A scarf joint (also known as a scarph joint) is a method of joining two members end to end in woodworking or metalworking . The scarf joint is used when the material being joined is not available in the length required. It is an alternative to other joints such as the butt joint and the splice joint and is often favored over these in joinery because it yields a barely visible glue line
APPLICATION: PROJECT
3. LAP OR HALVING JOINT Lap or Halving joint is a joint in which half the thickness of each member is cut away so that when they are joined together their upper and lower surfaces will be flushed.
APPLICATION: PROJECT
4. FINGER JOINT It is a joint in cabinetmaking formed by cutting two board ends into matching fingerlike projections that fit together

5. MORTISE AND TENON JOINT is a joint in which one member is a rectangular hole or known as mortise and the other member is a tongue or known as tenon. It is the strongest and the oldest type of joint.
