• Introduction The ayurved ic science deals with drugs of herbal, mineral, metallic and animal origin . Among the drugs of herbal plants are known for their toxic effects and are categorised under visha and upavisha drugs and are used either as a single drug or as an ingredient of a compound formulations. Adverse effects of these poisonous medicinal plants are mainly due to the improper Shodhana or due to its over dose. Karaveera , Nerium indicum is one such drug which has been classified as upavish acoording to various ayurvedic literature. It contains oleandrin as the chief chemical constituent and in Ayurveda, it is used for the management of krimi (helminthic disorder), kandu (itching), kustha (skin disease), vrana (wound) etc.

• Habitat :- Nerium indicum is a small evergreen shrub grown wild in Afghanisthan and distributed all over the India, Philippines and Nepal and also cultivated in gardens. Karaveera grows throughout India, it is found in Himalaya from Nepal to Kashmir upto 1000 metres . Nerium indicum grows best on river banks, river gravels, woodland garden, sunny edge and hedges.
• Morphology :- An erect, smooth shrub, 1.5 to 3 meters high with a cream coloured resinous juice. Leaves are in whorls of 3 or 4, dark green, linear- lanceolate with numerous horizontal nerves. Flowers are showy, sweet scented, single or double, white, pink or red, borne in teiminal inflorescence. The flowering season is from June -October. The flowers are hermaphrodite. Fruit is cylindrical, paired with deep linear striations. Seeds are numerous and compressed with a tuft of fine, shining white and silky hairs.

• Collection of Drug :- The flowering season is from June -October. The useful part of karaveera are Root, Root bark, Leaves. the are collected during this seasson and after shodhana it is stored. Storage The karaveera after shodana is stored in an airtight container.

• Shodana Of Karaveera :- • Method according to sarangadhara Karaveera roots should be cleaned thoroughly cut into small pieces. The pieces should made into a pottali and swedana is done with cow's milk for 3 hours. After swedana t he roots should be washed with water and dried. The obtained langali is washed dried and stored in a airtight container.

• Therapeutic uses:- Dermatitis- Macerated leaves of oleander have been applied. Also used in superficial tumor, syphilis, loss of hair by applying the kalka of its root . In Gingivitis Kwatha of karaveera leaves is used a s Nasal drop in children. A fixed combination of oleander leaf powdered exact, presents eye fluid exact lily of the valley fluid extract and squil powdered extract has been used for treating mild heart failure. According to charaka 7 th chapter in skin disease with absence of sweating and itching karaveera stem is crushed to make a brush and it is rubbed over the lesion to induce rakta mokshan .
