Kaveri River The Kaveri River is also known as the Cauvery River . It originates in the state of Karnataka (KA) It flows through Karnataka and the state of Tamil Nadu (TN) It empties into the Bay of Bengal It is 802 kilometers (498 mi) long

Kaveri River Basin This map shows the drainage areas in square kilometers within KA (35426 km 2 ) and TN (44422 km 2 ), as computed with data from AQUASTAT Process: Intersect layers for administrative boundaries and sub-basin areas to obtain sub-basin areas by state Extract sub-basin areas by state layers into two separate layers (KA and TN) Dissolve the two layers to get total area by state India Water Resource Information System ( India-WRIS ) provides these values for drainage areas: 36240 km 2 (KA) and 48730 km 2 (TN)

Kaveri Water Dispute Karnataka has long sought more equitable sharing of Kaveri River water On 16 February 2018, the Supreme Court of India pronounced its verdict on the Kaveri water dispute . SCI reduced the water allocation for TN by 14.75 TMC and raised the water allocation to KA by a corresponding amount. Final allocations: Allocation (TMC) Karnataka 284.75 Tamil Nadu 404.25 Kerala 30 Puducherry 7 Environmental protection 10 Escapages into the sea 4 Total 740
