When you hit the bottles, what is being transferred? Question
WHAT IS ENERGY?
Define energy. Describe the two main forms of energy. OBJECTIVES 1 2 3 Give examples of the two main forms of energy.
-the ability to do work. ENERGY
What are the two main forms of energy? Question
There are two main forms of energy— potential and kinetic energy. FORMS OF ENERGY
Potential energy is stored energy or energy by virtue of the position of an object. FORMS OF ENERGY
A stationary bike on top of the hill has stored energy called potential energy.
When the bike starts moving downhill, its potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy.
If an object is stationary, it has stored energy called potential energy. You can think of this type of energy as the "potential" of the object to do work. POTENTIAL ENERGY
EXAMPLES OF POTENTIAL ENERGY a stretched bow a golf ball sitting on a tee a hockey puck sitting on the ice
What are other examples of objects that have potential energy? Question
KINETIC ENERGY If an object is moving, it has kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy that an object possesses due to its motion. If the object moves faster, it has more kinetic energy.
EXAMPLES OF KINETIC ENERGY a basketball thrown in the air a bicycle in motion a moving volleyball during a game
What are other examples of objects that have kinetic energy? Question
What is energy? What are the two main forms of energy? What are examples of the two main forms of energy? CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING
Identify whether the objects in the given situations possess Potential Energy or Kinetic Energy. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. 1. Bird flying 2. Log in a fireplace 3. Watermelon on a desk 4. Car travelling on the highway 5. Car sitting in a driveway
6. Bunch of coconut stick on a table 7. Ball bouncing on the floor 8. Child jumping on his bed 9. Child sleeping on the crib 10. Marble rolling down the ramp
If an object is stationary, it has stored energy called potential energy. You can think of this type of energy as the "potential" of the object to do work. POTENTIAL ENERGY
Elastic potential energy is energy stored as a result of applying a force to deform an elastic object.
Chemical potential energy is the energy stored in atoms and the chemical bonds between them.
Gravitational potential energy is the energy possessed or acquired by an object due to a change in its position when it is present in a gravitational field.
