Classification of Kitchen Tools and Equipment Based on their Uses

A t the end of the lesson you will be able to: Identify the use of the different tools and equipment Classify the different kitchen tools and equipment according to its use Objectives:

01 Cutting Tools These are tools used for cutting fruits, vegetables and other ingredients that need to be cut Measuring Tools These are tools used for measuring ingredients either dry or liquid. 02 Preparation Tools These are tools used in food preparation 03 Cookwares These are tools intended for use on a stove or range cooktop for cooking dishes. 04

05 Cooking Utensils These are tools for cooking food. Kitchen Equipment These are more complicated tools and may refer to small electrical appliances or large power operated appliances 06

Cutting Tools

Examples Butcher’s Knife Kitchen Scissors Paring Knife Chopping Knife Bread Knife Boning Knife

Paring Knife used for removing skin of fruits and vegetables

Chopping Knife used to chop or dice food

Bread Knife Used for slicing bread or cutting sandwiches

Butcher Knife used for cutting large raw meat like chicken and pork.

Boning Knife used in removing the bones of poultry, meat and fish

Kitchen Shears used for trimming foods and opening food packages

Measuring Tools

Examples Liquid Measuring Cups Weighing Scale Measuring Spoons Dry Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons used to measure small quantities of both dry and liquid ingredients

Dry Measuring Cups used for measuring dry ingredients like flour and sugar.

Liquid Measuring Cups used for measuring liquid ingredients such as water and milk.

Weighing Scale used to measure large quantities of ingredients using gram as a unit

Preparation Tools

Examples Peeler Mallet Funnel Garlic Press Can Opener Bottle Opener Mortar and Pestle

Mixing Bowls used to hold fruits, vegetables and other ingredients. These are also used for mixing ingredients.

Strainer used to separate solid to liquid ingredients.

Wire Whip used in beating large number of eggs, whipping cream and mixing batter.

Colander used to drip water from large food item

Chopping Board used to protect the table while slicing and chopping

Grater used to grate or shred cheese, fresh coconut, chocolate and other fruits

Garlic Press used to crush garlic

Can Opener used to open cans

Bottle Opener used to remove metal cover of bottles

Peeler used to remove thin skin of vegetables and fruits

Kitchen Mallet used to pound raw meat to make it tender. The flat side is used to crack nuts.

Mortar and Pestle used for crushing and grinding solid ingredients

Funnel used to transfer liquid to another container

Saucepan used for boiling, stewing and making sauces

Pressure Cooker Used to tender and cook food quickly

Steamer used to prepare various food like siomai, siopao, puto, and leche flan in a sealed vessel
