FORMULATING EVALUATIVE STATEMENTS What is an Evaluative Statement?

It is a way of giving a better explanation to show the strength and the weaknesses of something through writing . Presents a value judgment based on a set of criteria. Used in giving a sound judgement – one that can be backed up or supported by valid reasons or proofs. EVALUATIVE STATEMENT

1. Formulate assertions about the content and properties of a text read . 2. Formulate a meaningful counterclaim in response to a claim made in the text read . Steps to compose an evaluative statement:

- are declarative sentences that claim something is true about something else ASSERTIONS

TYPES OF ASSERTION EMPHATIC LANGUAGE BASIC ASSERTION

- is a statement used to express the writer's feelings, beliefs, and opinions directly. This type of assertion is usually used in writing formal papers like thesis and dissertation. BASIC ASSERTION

I would like to finish this email before we have our conversation. I would like you to wait until I have finished speaking. EXAMPLES

-is a statement used to express empathy or on how a person understands the feelings and emotions of the literary author. EMPHATIC ASSERTION

I recognize you are busy with multiple projects, but I still need a response to my email by Thursday. I know this is making you angry and frustrated because you have not gotten a response yet. But I can help you by giving you an estimate of how long it might take. EXAMPLES

-is a statement used to express the feeling and preference of the writer. It is called I-Language because it focuses on the writer and is using the pronoun ‘I’. LANGUAGE ASSERTION

When you are late to a meeting, I become irritable because I feel as if you do not value our work enough to be on time EXAMPLE

If you are not so smart, you should try to be a teacher. EVALUATIVE STATEMENT: The statement is very discriminative against those with average intelligence and teachers in general. ACTIVITY: EVALUATIVE STATEMENT

Only rich people can become medical doctors. EVALUATIVE STATEMENT:

Every person has something good to add to this world.

In posting things on social media, you must “THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK”.

No one is so poor that he has nothing to share.

COUNTERCLAIM

Counterclaims, as defined by Tiongson (2016), are “claims made to rebut a previous claim.” COUNTERCLAIMS

“I did not like the book” “I thought the movie was cool” “ The movie was Jason’s best”

CLAIM vs. COUNTERCLAIM REBUTTAL- is your response to the counterclaim. - to make it more credible, you should at least have one piece of evidence.

CLAIM : Students should be allowed to chew gum in class because it increases focus. COUNTERCLAIM : Students should not chew gum in class because it acts as a distraction to others, it is a health issue, and it is a safety issue.

CLAIM : although they are traditionally seen as a distraction, students should be able to bring cell phones to school because digital literacy can be used for educational purposes. COUNTERCLAIM : students should not be able to bring cell phones to school because they could use them to communicate during a test.

CLAIM: 1. Marijuana should not be legalized because it is harmful to your health. 2. Same sex marriage should be legalized in the Philippines. 3. A liberal arts education prepares students best.

CLAIM : Cell phones should be allowed in the classroom. COUNTERCLAIM : Cell phones should not be allowed in the classroom. REBUTTAL: By allowing cell phone use in the classroom, students learn how to use and manage their cell phones as a digital resource as they should outside of school.

CLAIM: Porac Model Community High School should become a year-round school because students will be able to retain more information over shorter breaks. COUNTERCLAIM: PMCHS should not be a year round school because, even though the breaks are shorter and students will retain more, students may also get worn down and “tune out” because of having less lengthy breaks.
