About This Presentation

The power point deals with the laboratory equipment in a chemical laboratory. This gives information about the uses of various equipment such as conical flask, burette, pipette, test-tube, round bottom flask, balance, funnel, stand, retort stand, gas-jar, syringe,

What is Science?
Systematic way of acquiring knowledge is science.
What is chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of substances; their properties,
structure, and the changes they
undergo.

•Scientific Apparatus
•Scientists use special apparatus when they
work in the laboratory. They often draw
diagrams of the apparatus they use. These
diagrams represent the apparatus in two
dimensions and as a cut through image.

•Glassware used in a chemistry laboratory is
special. It needs to resist chemical attack. Some
glassware has to withstand sterilization. Other
glassware is used to measure specific volumes,
so it can't change its size appreciably over room
temperatures. Chemicals may be heated and
cooled so the glass needs to resist shattering
from thermal shock. For these reasons, most
glassware is made from a borosilicate glass,
such as Pyrex (to withstand heat, chemical
attacks, etc.)

•26. Beehive shelf
•27. Water bath

•The Beaker
•The use of the beaker is to hold and pour liquids.
They can also be used to heat liquids

•Beakers are used to hold liquids. They cannot
measure liquids accurately but they do have
graduations which allow you to estimate the
volume of liquid. Some beakers, those made of
heat resistant glass such as Pyrex, can be heated.

•The Conical Flask
•Conical flasks are used in chemistry labs for
titration,(volumetric measurements)
The conical flask has the same properties as a beaker
but it has a different shape. Because its neck is narrow
a delivery tube can be fitted into it.

•This means that gases which evaporate when a
liquid is heated can be 'directed' to another part
of the apparatus.

•The Test Tube and test tube stand
•It is used for testing and performing chemical
tests. Test tube stand is used to keep the test
tubes.

•Test tubes are also used to hold liquids.
Heat resistant test tubes can be heated.
When you draw test tubes you do not show the
test tube rack. It is assumed that the test tubes
are being supported by the rack.

•Test tubes are widely used by chemiststo hold,
mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid
chemicals

Flat Bottom Boiling Flasks
The flat bottom boiling flasks are more useful in the sense
that they can be kept at the surface with more ease. They
can withstand more vigorous boiling. They are made of
heat resistant glasses and are resistant to thermal shocks.

Round bottom flask
It is used to carry out reactions especially when
the substance needs to be boiled

Ordinary funnel
Ordinary funnel, into which is placed filter paper or other
material, through which a liquid / solid mixture is poured in
order to separate them
Or
It is used during the process of filtration to separate a solid
from a liquid.

Thistle funnel
Thistle funnel is used to pour acid during gas
preparation

The Pestle and Mortar
It is used for grinding and powdering the
substance.
Note that the mortar is the dish and the pestle is the baton used
for grinding.

Measuring cylinder
A measuring cylinderor graduated cylinderis
used to measurethe volumeof liquids

Separating funnel
It is used to separate two immiscible liquids
example oil and water

Gas jar
It is used for collecting gas during
experiments

Tripod stand
It is used for supporting apparatus during heating

Bee hive shelf
It is used for keeping gas jar during gas
preparation

Wire guaze / Wire mesh
Wire gauze can be used to support a container
(such as a beaker or flask) during heating.
It is used for uniform heating of chemicals

Trough
It is used for storing water or liquids during
experiments

Crucible / Porcelain / China dish
It is used for strong direct heating and
evaporating substances

Test tube holder
It is used for holding the test tubes during
experiments

Delivery tube
For upward displacement -It is used for
collecting gas in air when the gas is heavier
than air

For downward displacement -It is
used for collecting gas in water

Bunsen burner
It is used in laboratories to give steady
source of heat without smoke.

Distillation flask-
It is used for boiling the liquids during
distillation.

Retort stand-
It is used for fixing the apparatus during
experiments

Tongs-It is used for holding apparatus like
china dish
