CARE OF LABORATORY WARES, EQUIPMENT’S AND CHEMICALS AND GENERAL PRINCIPLES

CARE OF LABORATORY WARES Wash all glassware before it is first used. Do not use if it is scratched, chipped, cracked or etched.

Avoid using stirring rods with sharp ends, these can scratch and weaken the glassware. Carrying or lifting large glass flasks, beakers etc. by the neck or rim can be very dangerous. Always provide support from the base and sides .

Always heat glassware gently and gradually to avoid sudden temperature changes. No sudden pressure changes. Always apply and release pressure gradients and vacuums gradually. Always ensure that volumetric glassware is kept scrupulously clean

CARE OF LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS Well-maintained lab equipment ensures that data is ● consistent and ● reliable, which in turn impacts the productivity and integrity of the work produced

Various procedures ensuring that your laboratory equipment is well-maintained and cared for :- Developing SOP’s for all lab equipment. Preparing documentation on each specific equipment. Outlining a preventive maintenance program for each piece of equipment. Training both technical and managerial staff on proper use and care of lab equipment.

CARE OF LABORATORY CHEMICALS ● Laboratory hazards can be minimized by following these safety measures in handling ;

Always label all containers with chemicals. Use protective equipment and wear a laboratory coat. Avoid intentional smelling, inhaling and tasting of chemicals. A void direct contact with chemicals, far from your hands face, clothes and shoes.

Mark the date on all containers upon receipt and again when reopened. A periodic check on chemical containers for rust, corrosion, and leakage is a must. Attach chemical labels with all necessary information to all containers. Immediately read the warning labels when opening newly received reagent chemicals

Whenever you leave the lab after handling any chemicals wash thoroughly.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES Know locations of eyewash stations, and fire extinguishers.  Know emergency exit routes. Avoid skin and eye contact with chemicals. Minimize all chemical exposures.

All laboratory personnel should place emphasis on safety and chemical hygiene at all times. Never leave containers of chemicals open. Wash exposed areas of the skin prior to leaving the laboratory. Long hair and lose clothing must be pulled back and secured from entanglement or potential capture.

Equipment should be maintained according to the manufacturer's requirements. All equipment should be regularly inspected for wear or deterioration. Designated and well-marked waste storage locations are necessary. No cell phone or ear bud usage is allowed in the active portion of the laboratories or during experimental operations.
