Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
Lab Coats:Always wear a lab coat to protect your skin and clothing
from chemicals and biological materials.
Gloves:Use appropriate gloves for handling chemicals or biological
specimens. Change them frequently and avoid touching personal
items (e.g., phones) while wearing gloves.
Safety Goggles/Face Shields:Protect your eyes and face from
splashes, debris, and harmful substances.
Masks:Use masks or respirators if working with volatile chemicals or
biological agents that may be inhaled.

General Lab Conduct
No Eating or Drinking:Avoid consuming food or drinks in the lab to
prevent contamination.
Keep Workspace Clean:Maintain an organized and clean work
area. Clean up spills immediately and dispose of waste properly.
Follow Instructions:Adhere strictly to lab protocols and procedures
as outlined by your instructor or supervisor.
Report Hazards:Notify your supervisor immediately if you encounter
any unsafe conditions or equipment malfunctions.

Chemical Safety
Labeling:Ensure all chemicals are clearly labeled with their
contents, hazards, and expiration dates.
Storage:Store chemicals in designated areas according to their
compatibility and hazard classification. Keep flammable chemicals
away from heat sources.
Handling:Use appropriate techniques and equipment for handling
chemicals. Never pipette by mouth or directly inhale chemical
fumes.
Spill Response:Follow specific procedures for cleaning chemical
spills, and use spill kits if necessary. For large spills, evacuate the area
and alert emergency services.

Biological Safety
Containment:Use biosafety cabinets for handling potentially
infectious materials. Follow biosafety level guidelines relevant to the
agents being used.
Sterilization:Properly sterilize equipment and dispose of biological
waste in designated containers.
Personal Hygiene:Wash hands thoroughly after handling biological
materials and before leaving the lab.

Equipment Safety
Inspection:Check equipment for defects or malfunctions before
use. Do not use damaged equipment.
Operation:Operate equipment according to manufacturer
instructions and training. Never leave equipment running
unattended.
Maintenance:Regularly maintain and clean equipment as per lab
guidelines.

Emergency Procedures
Fire:Know the location of fire extinguishers and how to use them.
Familiarize yourself with the lab’s fire evacuation plan and exits.
Chemical Exposure:In case of chemical contact with skin or eyes,
immediately use the nearest eye wash station or safety shower. Seek
medical attention if needed.
First Aid:Be aware of basic first aid procedures for common lab
injuries (cuts, burns, etc.). Keep a first aid kit readily available.

Waste Disposal
Segregation:Separate waste into appropriate categories: chemical,
biological, and sharps. Follow lab-specific guidelines for disposal.
Containers:Use designated containers for each type of waste. Do
not overfill containers and ensure they are properly sealed before
disposal.
Disposal Procedures:Follow established procedures for disposing of
hazardous materials and report any issues with waste disposal.

Training and Competency
Training:Ensure all lab personnel receive proper training on safety
protocols, equipment use, and emergency procedures.
Competency:Regularly assess and refresh training to ensure
ongoing compliance with safety practices.

Documentation and Compliance
Safety Data Sheets (SDS):Review SDS for all chemicals and materials
used in the lab.
Record Keeping:Maintain accurate records of safety inspections,
training sessions, and incidents.
Regulations:Comply with local, state, and federal regulations
regarding laboratory safety and hazardous materials.

Communication and Reporting
Safety Meetings:Participate in regular safety meetings and briefings.
Incident Reporting:Report accidents, near-misses, and unsafe
conditions promptly to the appropriate authorities.
